    I have no idea what caused this although the typical response was acid.
    I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    Those are post mint caused problems. Acid, run over repeatedly in a parking lot, whatever. It's just a damaged coin.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    Agree. Looks like it spent some time on a road or parking lot.

    Is definitely NOT road rash.

    And, I am NOT saying it's original or even a mint error but its definitely not from spending time in the road.

    Looks like it may be a combination of PMD (road/parking lot) and very late die state. This poor half dollar has led a very difficult life. image
