UHR MS70PL...Significant Premium in PCGS

philographerphilographer Posts: 1,381 ✭✭✭✭✭
In reviewing the BST, I notice that the 2009 Saint Gaudens Ultra High Relief in MS70PL PCGS carries a significant premium of over MS70PL from the other company. A dealer is offering $1,250 MORE for a PCGS piece.

This is a huge premium!

Has anyone here had success in crossing a MS70PL from the other company to PCGS? What is the success rate? For those that didn't cross, what held them back?

Any thoughts are appreciated...

Thanks much!

PCGS won't cross a 70 grade, and I believe the other companies may have the same policies. You can't see a coin well enough through a slab to warrant a 70 grade, the chance of missing something is just too high.

The "70 Paradox." So what is it about the coin that, once in a 70 holder, makes it worth that much of a premium?

I think the modern pr70 grade is just ridiculous.........I can't tell a 69 from a 70 and the price increase from a 69 to 70 is just crazy!

    "This is a huge premium!"

It may well be, but the reality is that is what collectors are asking me for. I need another PCGS-MS70PL right this minute and will pay MORE than ANY posted (legit) buy price for the coin that exists at this moment (that I am aware of).

I would have no problem if more collectors asked me for the NGC-MS70PL version which is far cheaper and much easier to locate due to the much, much higher "pop" since NGC has been grading the coin for 2 1/2 years compared with PCGS' half year. But, the requests I get are mainly for the PCGS version despite the "huge" difference in price.

Close examination of a PR69 coin with a 10X lens usually reveals the flaw to me.
  • We sell an average of 50 UHR coins per week. This is an average. In the beginning the number was way, way higher and a few months back there was a lull and these were not quite dead but lets just say the buyers mostly disappeared and sales probably dropped off to less than 10 coins per week. Most don't even make it to the website, but when they do they are usually sold within hours. We managed to find two PCGS MS70PL at the ANA and paid $5500 when others were offering $4500. Even though there are far more NGC MS70PL's due to a 2 year head start, these have become almost impossible to find as well. I am amazed that we are not getting bombarded with MS70's right now since we are paying over $3000 per coin but oddly enough it's just a trickle and when they are not as "hot" everyone wants to sell at lower numbers. The bottom line, UHR's are hot right now and in short supply.

If it takes a 10X loupe to see the difference the difference is not worth any money!

I am in that crowd as well. Good gracious, a 10x to show - who cares?
Also, I have seen MS70s from the major TPGs that HAVE flaws! Miniscule to be sure, but this is bogus that folks are charging the premiums that they do...

The diffrerence in quality between MS69 and MS70 may be very insignificant to many folks, but the difference is price certainly is not. Take the MS69PL vs. the MS70PL. One is about a $2,650 coin (worth just a hundred or two hundred dollars more than a raw coin) and the other about a $5,650 coin (worth close to $3,000 more than a raw coin)! We are practically "fighting" each other to get the MS70PL coins for $3,000 extra because we have orders to fill. The difference may be "silly" or "rediculous" or "overpriced" or any other adjectives one wants to attach to the difference for the 70 grade, BUT PLEASE SELL ME THE SILLY, REDICULOUS, OVERPRICED MS70 coins TONIGHT! These were on Coin Vault yesterday raw for $3250. Robert Chambers said most of what he sends to the TPGs come back PL. Looks like a steal perhaps. I wonder if the mint will ever produce these again, since they went through a lot trouble minting these. We shall see. Just be cautious out there because I know the reverse proof AGEs dropped in price through the years and that was only a 10K mintage coin. The 70s in the beginning were going in the 5k range. What is different with these UHRs is that they seem to be increasing in price two years out unlike the reverse proof gold AGEs. If the mint pays attention to their popularity, they would make more of these.

The one UHR I bought from the Mint in 2009 just came back PCGS MS-70 PL. Doesn't fit with my collecting interests. What's a fair asking price these days? Thanks!

Type UHR in the BST search function. One dealer is offering $5850 for PCGS MS70PL. Congratulations!

I'm happy keeping them in the original mint packaging.
