Wonder how Beantown Coins impacts J.J. Teaparty???

I know that Liz and Gail have a very succesful bullion business at JJ Teaparty in Boston, aside from numismatics..
This is certainly an interesting turn of events.............

Beantown Coins, Boston's Newest Rare Coin Dealer, Now Makes Housecalls Within The Greater Boston Area

In order to rapidly expand its inventory, Beantown Coins, Boston's newest rare coin dealer, is now making housecalls within the Greater Boston area. The experienced team at Beantown will travel, within these limits, in order to purchase coins, bullion, and even fine jewelry from the public. The inventory for sale at Beantown will not be portable, due to security reasons, and all payments will be made by check.

Boston, MA (PRWEB) August 23, 2011

Beantown Coins, Boston's newest rare coin dealer, now makes housecalls. In order to expand their inventory rapidly, the Beantown Coins representatives will now travel within the Greater Boston area to make purchases from the general public. The new dealers will not travel with company inventory, but instead will continue to list their inventory on the company's website: http://www.Beantowncoins.com, enabling customers to buy coins online. Customers will also continue to be able to sell coins online via their web contact form and according to the company terms and conditions.

The professional graders at Beantown Coins will travel within the Greater Boston area according to the estimated size of the lot. Potential sales estimated to be less than $100 in total will not qualify for housecalls. For larger lots, the larger the estimated sale, the farther they will travel beyond the standard area. In addition to rare coins, the Beantown Coins representatives are also authorized to purchase fine jewelry and bullion, which is gold and silver coins without rarity and grade premium. Bullion prices can change dramatically throughout the day so all offers to purchase bullion must be accepted or declined immediately.

The company expects to expand their inventory at an even faster rate with this new promotion. According to company manager Joe Palmieri, "Many people have been waiting for precious metal prices like these for years, and some are unable, perhaps through work conflicts or due to disability, to travel extensively to hunt for the best prices for their collections. As a new company we know we're offering better prices than our competitors because we have to, and we know of no one else doing this."

About Beantown Coins:

Beantown Coins was established in 2011 as a way for their proprietor to share his unique inventory and the skill of his staff with the general public. David Leventhal, the son of a coin dealer, has himself been a full-time numismatist (coin dealer) since 1979. David's father, Edwin Leventhal founded, and operated for over 30 years, J.J. Teaparty, Boston's oldest and largest rare coin dealers. Before it's sale to new owners, David was employed at J.J. Teaparty by his father in all aspects of numismatics, including acting as an agent for buyers at auction. He has extensive experience in all categories of rare and collectible coins and brings his skill in grading to verifying their entire inventory. According to manager Joe Palmieri, "We will continue to represent the high standards of generations of merchants of our trade, and we will soon become a major presence in rare coins, online."

I would say very little, as JJ has many loyal customers.

I ran into Beantown on eBay. Wasn't especially fond of their inventory on their website. But will be interesting to see if that changes over time...
  • They're called Beantown but are located in Weymouth. Uhm. OK.
    Website is amateurish looking.
I'd guess it means diddly squat for JJ T.

At the ANA I saw a customer come up to J.J.Teaparty's table and ask if he could get his money back on a coin that he had purchased from them the previous day.He stated that it did not look as nice when he compared it to one that he already had in his collection. The immediate response was yes and they gave him his check back! How many other dealers would do that? A real class act!image

J.J. Teaparty are great to work with... it'd take a better inventory and greater customer service to compete with them; it's not going to happen anytime soon!

JJ TeaParty has built a solid and outstanding reputation over many years. A newbie to the scene will have a tough hill to climb as a competitor. Unless they choose to substantially reduce their own margins to try and gain some marketshare, I doubt they will cause even a ripple. Remember, JJ Teaparty has a national following, not just the greater Boston area. That makes a big difference. So my short answer is, not at all.

I would not want to be one of their house call people. Can you imagine going to strange house with an inventory of coins, with the potential customer or mugger knowing that you are carrying thousands of dollars worth of inventory?

When I was a dealer I did make house calls, but only to people I knew.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I believe they are only making house calls to buy and then only paying by check, so no inventory or cash would be involved, if I read the article correctly.

I suspect that the Boston coin market is big enough to accommodate two coin dealers, although neither of them could be considered a 'local' coin dealer. Make no mistake, J. J. Teaparty is my all time number one favorite coin dealer, and has been for over twenty years. But I did business with them even before David Leventhal left, and I have continued to do business with both of them for years. Just last week, at the ANA in Chicago, I both bought coins from and sold coins to J. J. Teaparty, and it was a very pleasurable experience, as usual. But I also stopped David Leventhal in the aisle to see what half dimes he might have, as well. I'm sure that Liz and Gail are not exactly shaking in their boots at the prospect of competition, but David Leventhal is not exactly the new kid on the block, as he has been around under the Teaparty banner and on his own for many years. He has a good eye for quality coins, and I have found him to be both fair and reasonable. My advice would be to check them both out. To be sure, Liz and Gail at Teaparty have set the bar pretty high, but there is certainly room for one more quality coin dealer.

If that's all they are doing, their "house calls" are nothing special. A lot of big dealers, including Heritage, will do that if the collection is large enough. And Heritage will travel longer distances than just around the Dallas area.
