my first EF45+ coin

fishteethfishteeth Posts: 2,267 ✭✭✭✭✭
I picked up my first EF45+ coin this week. This is the first I have seen, but this was not the reason I purchased it. Instead this is a variety I needed
for my set. This is an Overton 118, which I consider to be the true small 8 Large letter reverse, see how the words crowd together. If this is an EF45+ then most of my EF45's would be EF45++'s. Of course I am a little picky when i buy my set coins.
Honestly the + does not mean much to me, I was more excited to upgrade my set with this coin. I guess I would have liked a little luster on an EF45+. Now the strike is nice but the coin is a bit splotchy and has average eye appeal in hand.

THis 1828 is in an EF45 holder but is what I would call an EF45+. Strike may be a bit weaker, but nice luster and very good eye appeal.

Great piece. It is nice to start seeing those +'s in the lower grades now.

First coin I have seen under MS with a + on it. Very nice Indeed. When did they instigate pluses on lower grade coins? How low will pluses go? PO1+ ? That would be nuts.

The plus coin is MUCH better than the other 45. In fact the other 45 looks more like a 40 to me.

Both coins are nice. I'm not a plus fan or fanatic.....just like the plus coin better......lot more detail.

Sometimes I wonder if people let their slabs rattle around in a bag of gravel. How long has the plus system been in place for non Secure plus slabs, or even Secure plus for that matter? How do fairly new slabs, get so scratched up in such a short period of time?

I submitted a classic gold $5 quite a while back and it graded 45+

    that was many months ago
    .
    .
also a liberty $5 and it came back 63+
    .
    .
i am pretty sure the + designation was part of the announcement with secure plus and coin sniffer.

    That second coin really rocks!

You need some plastic polish for the scuffy slabs, though, it looks like. I've heard that Brasso works?

I like the first- I think the top coin could have graded 50- it is a terrific coin

Here's my first PCGS XF45+ (which is the only + grade that I currently own). It was purchased at the 2010 Alabama Numismatic Society show from Al Adams (Gold Rush Gallery). It was in a blue label ANACS holder, graded XF45, and shortly thereafter I submitted it to PCGS for their Crossover service.
