Home Precious Metals

bought some very precious metal this weekend and spent $103

Although I have been taking a little profit on the recent runup, I bought a little precious metal this weekend in the form of tin cans.

I spent $103 and got enough food and drinks to feed my wife and I for over 3 weeks, a fire starter, propane for the portable camping grill, BIC lighters, batteries, Sterno, and peroxide. It only takes up about a 3' X 3' square about 3' high.

Feels good to know I'm a little prepared, maybe not the Armageddon scenario, but we do have a hurricane coming this way in a few days and it might leave us in the dark for a couple days. I haven't felt this good about spending money on something other than silver in a while.

bought sum lead also, getting ready for them dove birds to start flying. Those would be backup also if somebody got smart and wanted to plunder around the homestead.

This is the way to go in terms of long term food rations.

I have enough of this stuff to last me, my wife, and my kid about 3 months. I also have a hand operated katadyn water purifier and a magnesium fire starter and a lead dispersal device with over 500 servings of lead.

Before you call me a nut job, the total amount of cash invested for the above is about $1,400....or roughly 3 gold eagle 1/4 oz coins. The way I see it, if things actually get bad enough for me to use any of the above, you wont be able to get all that stuff AT THAT TIME for less than 3 ounces of gold....and maybe even more than that.

Its an extremely cheap insurance policy in the event it will be needed someday. And if we dont ever need any of it.....all the better!

Yep, put 100 rounds of .380 into a silouette at 25 feet on Friday. Three 7's, couple dozen 8's, the 10 and X were blown out on the left side and the 9's were mostly blown out on the left side. Would prefer that the blown out part was on the right side but that will be for another visit. The cool thing was that the rangemaster came over to my target and started talking with me about the Baretta. He said I shot a pretty good target and I told him that I ran out of bullets and he said "Yep, a hundred rounds doesn't last long." That was the quote of the day. Gold at 2K might get me out to the range again. Steady on...

It would even be nice to have that stuff for simple extended power outages. Like I said in the coin forum, we had a derecho in 2009 that knocked out power for several days. It would have been nice to have had some packaged meals on hand for emergencies. All of our meats in the deep freeze ruined and we pretty much had to eat out twice a day in the town 10 miles to the north where they had power. A couple evenings I just cooked out on the charcoal grill but it still required us going to the grocery store in the next town and bringing it home and cooking and eating everything we bought. Much cheaper to have prepacked stuff on hand.

And what if the shelves were empty at the grocery store? And what if you didn't have gas in your car to drive somewhere to eat? And.......Lots to think about.

I didn't buy any liquor (I don't drink), but I hear Vodka is good for all sorts of things. May need to send a heathen to the package shop for a bottle or 12. image

I usually have a case or two of MRE's in the house. Mostly just in case of winter emergencies. In 1997 we lost power on our farm for 3 weeks while dealing with a blizzard that left record snow fall. I was only 12 yrs old but I still remember my dad pulling out those MRE's and lighting up the fireplace.

  • Dove season starts here on Sept 3rd at high noon, planning the hunt.

Irene looks to be coming straight for NC, I have plenty of canned/dry food to last weeks.

I might need to pick up some dog and cat food though.

A few years ago my wife and I started canning because our garden was producing much more than we could eat at the time. Last year canned/pickled over 20 types of peppers. Carrots are awesome mixed in with the hot ones. This year lots of spaghetti sauce - have about 50 tomato plants. I make infusions as well. Right now I have tomato/jalopeno vodka going. Also this week I made/canned mango habenaro sauce - excellent on chicken
