Poppage "SCANS" added 8/26...I'd say very conservative overall

These cards were really high end...so I'm not really that excited. Was hoping for a 9 with something.

1 1 18602934 NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1969 TOPPS 512 CLEON JONES Card US (Easily the weakest in the group and I was expecting an 8)
2 1 18602935 NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1975 TOPPS 660 HANK AARON Card US (Very strong 8...I'm okay with this because I know how tough they are with this card)
3 1 18602936 NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1972 TOPPS 299 HANK AARON Card US (Absolute stunning card that I thought was solid mint other than 60-40 S-S....not real happy)
4 1 18602937 NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1973 TOPPS 100 HANK AARON Card US (Mint corners and well centered...not happy)
5 1 18602938 NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1976 TOPPS 240 PETE ROSE Card US (Very modest print- almost perfectly centered...not sure why not graded higher)
6 1 18602939 NEAR MINT-MINT+ 8.5 1971 TOPPS 263 JOHN ELLIS Card US (Almost perfect)

I thought 1 of the Aarons (72 or 73) was going to 9. Will post scans when I receive them back.

UPDATE 8/26....I'm standing firm with everything I said when I received the grades. Unless your grading these as 10's...which I'm not; I don't see why at least one did not get a 9 or surely more than 1 8.5. The 72 and 73 Aaron have mint corners and they don't have to be perfectly 50-50 to get a 9. I can slightly live with the 72; but everything but the centering is very high end. The 71 is just flat out spectacular. The 75 Aaron has a print mark and other than that a solid NM-MT+. I think I will crack a few in the future. Tell me what you think.

  • Does the first three numbers (186) indicate the grader?

My latest submission had those first 3 numbers, and I found my grades to be a bit lower than expected as well (with the exception of 2 out of the 15). I'm planning on cracking and resubmitting two of them.

It seems hey are always tough on grades after the National. Long days, very busy, people screaming why there sub isn't logged, etc., etc., image

You got grader #186. He has been tough on my grades as well.
  • Interesting about 186...just had a 6 card collectors club freebie pop that I dont have in hand yet but I felt strongly that the cards were graded rather harshly(something I dont feel very often) and after reading this post I looked and sure enough the certs started with 186.

I didn't know that was their system...but I just got some horrible grades from 186 as well. Seriously brutal.

Sorry your poppage was not what was expected! I could use a nice 72T & 73T Aaron formy set... LMK if you decide to sell them?

  • Mickey71Mickey71 Posts: 4,259 ✭✭✭✭
I really don't know about the "186" stuff; but this was about the highest quality on a couple of these cards I've ever had. A couple of the Aaron's may be heading back on a resub.
  • Mickey,

Do you crack them out before you resub?

Like I said, I'm definitely sending back at least two of mine, as I felt they at least 1 full grade too low, if not more. Just trying to decide if I should crack them out first.

my most recent sub was a "187"

    prior to those, "189"

there must be a backwards trend developing here or someone accidently dropped all the numbers on the floor. image

On the 75 mini's I've had graded in the last year, graders "186" and "189" are very tough, but extremely consistent which I appreciate. I actually will pay a little more for a 75 mini starting with 186 or 189. Case in point is a PSA 8 '75 mini Yount I purchased a couple of weeks ago. In addition to being visually appealing, the card stood out for me in that it starts with "189." I paid $10 above my buy price of $80 for it suspecting that it would be conservatively graded (which turned out to be true once I had it in hand).

I'd send all those in again at least 3 times before giving up. I think you're bound to catch a favorable opinion on a couple.
It'll cost you as much as another $100, and might take a few more months, but a 9 on any of those will more than pay for it.

As for the first 3 digits representing the grader, I don't think that's true. I've had both great and poor results on subs with the same first digits.

    BTW here's my latest sub

    1 1 18672122 NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1974 TOPPS 241 GLENN BECKERT WASHINGTON Card US
    2 1 18672123 NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1973 TOPPS 174 RICH GOSSAGE Card US
    3 1 18672124 NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1973 TOPPS 497 CARDINALS MGR./COACHES Card US
    4 1 18672125 EXCELLENT-MINT 6 1973 TOPPS 275 TONY PEREZ Card US
    5 1 18672126 NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1973 TOPPS 559 BARRY LERSCH Card US
    6 1 18672127 MINT 9 1973 TOPPS 609 ROOKIE 2nd BASEMEN L.BLANKS/P.GARCIA/D.LOPES Card US
    7 1 18672128 NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1975 TOPPS 631 LEE LACY Card US
    8 1 18672129 MINT 9 1975 TOPPS 4 '74 HIGHLIGHTS AL KALINE Card US

About what I expected, I just thought the Goose would get the 9 and the Lopes would get the 8. The 6 on Tony is the second time subbing so there is something I'm missing on that one.

Do you know for fact the first three numbers are the grader? I was under the impression they just ran through seriel numbers.

My latest sub all started with 186 as well.

I thought for certain this would come back a PSA 10. I have never sent in a card for a review but I think I might with this one.

  • RookieWaxRookieWax Posts: 1,066 ✭✭✭
I doubt the first 3 digits are simply serial numbers, because my most recent submission labels started with 186, while my previous submission labels started with 187. It is more likely the grader's ID.

I question the 73 Aaron, but outside of that i think the grades are appropriate.

    +1
    Nice cards overall!
Love the 1976 Rose ,, Could be a 9 like you say but I think they saw the print dots. They have been crazy on tech stuff.
  • handymanhandyman Posts: 5,392 ✭✭✭✭✭
Can we see the back of the 1973 aaron? 1972 has mint corners but the centering keeps it out of the 9 I think.
  • hammeredhammered Posts: 2,671 ✭✭✭
I also think that they are accurately graded after seeing the scans
The 73 Aaron, 76 Rose and 71 Ellis have a shot to improve on re-submission, but probably just a half grade
    Very nice cards though
  • The 73 Aaron looks undergraded. Could probably get an 8.5 on any given day, maybe even a 9. The Rose is the only other card that could bump a half grade.

Great cards either way. Crack those two and sub again.

I think they are accurately graded. The '73 Aaron has a shot at 8.5 or 9 but I think it downgraded because of the light print. I have a perfectly centered '73 Palmer with four mint corners and factory gloss that I've submitted 4 or 5 times and it came back an 8 every single time. It's not really worth that many submissions but I really thought it belonged in a 9 holder like most of the other stars that came from the same set I pulled the Palmer from. The only flaw is it has a washed out print like your Aaron. That's the only thing I can think of that keeps it from getting more than an 8.

186 has nothing to do with a specific grader.

    Good for you.

186 has everything to do with a specific grader.
  • '76 Rose looks like a 9... '72 Aaron looks almost like a miscut to me. We all know how they are on '71s... Very nice cards though.
  • Indy78Indy78 Posts: 806 ✭✭✭
On the 76 rose, the very minor black ink splotches to the left of Rose's right eye, on the brim of the cap, and on his left shoulder holds the card at an 8 IMO.
  • itzagoneritzagoner Posts: 8,753 ✭✭
each card is accurately graded. i would not send any of those in expecting a 9.
  • Mickey71Mickey71 Posts: 4,259 ✭✭✭✭
I feel bad now....nobody agrees with me that they all should all be 10's.---Just kidding. Thanks for the comments. The consensus is that they are fairly graded. I was hoping for a 9. I knew there were no slam dunks on a 9. One thought on the Rose...it's only true flaw is the print-it's about perfectly centered with almost perfect corners...Why not 8.5? Remember we are way past judging them as 10's. Go find the next 10 1975 Aaron's in an 8 on EBAY and tell me where this one ranks in overall appeal-I believe very high...top 3 at least.

The cards are definitely nice but I can see how they all received the grades they were given. The 75 Aaron has a touched bottom right corner and PSA is always tough on the corners with that issue. On the 73 if you compare the top right corner, which looks sharp and perfect in the scan, with the bottom two they don't look as sharp. The centering on the Jones and 72 are both off just enough to require some bulk submitter love to pull higher grades. The bottom right corner on the 71 has a little touch. Probably a bit of nitpicking but those were the flaws that I saw from the scans and are flaws that typically keep cards out of PSA 9 holders, at least with the type of cards I sub most often.

The challenge to me is that if you cracked and re-subbed several of these cards enough times you would get a bump or two. As we all know not all PSA graders are the same. I had a sub of 1986 Fleer basketball a while back where all my PSA 9 type cards came back 10s. Probably 50+% of the cards had 1 grade inflation, I initially thought they had messed my cards up with one of their bulk submitters. If I were to use that sub and how individual cards in it were graded for comparison purposes with the rest of my PSA subs I would always end up disappointed.

I would say the 76 Rose seems like the most likely for a bump. Some graders are not as harsh when it comes to very minor PD.

    Fergie23,
I can"t disagree with you at all. I think the hard thing for me to understand about the .5 is that it really isn't a .5 at all....it's more like .8 or .9 in my experience with raw and review subs.
