How about a Jefferson starter set in the Blue Whitman #9009 or #9039
about half way complete, It's a start and there fun for the hunt and
completely doable from pocket change over time and a sharp eye.

  • I like the Jefferson idea, I have completed a set from circulation, took several years, but I did do it and I am not that old, or memorial cents.

    Sample slabs
  • If it needs to be holdered you can buy PR-69 DCAM Jefferson's for $3-$5 each on ebay.

I think by "HOLDER" he means 2x2 or something like that? I doubt he will find 45-50 common date VG Merc Dimes anywhere folks...and give them away. This is an expensive project already with the silver content of those dimes, UNC Ikes etc...

Edit: Very nice of you to do this! I commend you on a great project!

Maybe Unc Bicentennial Quarters for an idea?

Over the past 4 years, I have done similar for my son's birthdays and for his classes.
What I have done, so far, is to buy the "self-slabs" on ebay....in groups of 25 they cost under a couple of bucks each.
I have then slabbed presidential dollars, sacagawea dollars (I try to go for current year), SHQs from the birthyear (so, 2001 would likely be the ones you need/want), and the new cents (2009 and 2010).
Many of the parents liked the new cents ones as they hadn't seen the design change.

The self slabs are easy to re-open, so I don't go into it thinking they will be locked away forever but if a kid wants it as money, then they want it as money and won't be stopped. I do tape all the edges though, so it isn't accidentally opened.

With the self-slabs, I also print out labels to "celebrate" the occassion for the gifting.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

For U.S. coins, old wheaties from the likely birth years for their parents or grandparents are an idea that might get them personally interested and bring the parents into the fun, and be a lot less cost than some other options.

Why remove the world coins? Many kids would choose a topical coin with an animal design over most of the other coins on the list. Uniform is okay and what the droids at the school probably prefer, but different is likely more fun for the kids.

    Hi All,

    Real input wanted.

The coins I listed were the giveaways I've already completed.

I like the silver certificates idea though the event is National COIN Week. Same with foreign coins and NATIONAL.

I think low grade lib nicks are ugly so they are out. G/VG 2c or 3c coins would be expensive and very hard to find decent. Perhaps proof coins could work.

    Any other ideas?

Proof coins go over well with the kids...I've given many away and they prompt the kids to ask questions about why they are so nice looking compared to "regular" coins.

empty blue whitman 1975 to current Lincoln Memorial Folders.

Its a totally collectable set from circulation with opportunity to find nice reds for only 1 cent each. PERFECT kid thingy.

You can GIVE a kid anything...but when THEY find it themselves...thats when the magic has taken hold.

    Thanks everyone!

Went to ANA with silver certificates (at least) in mind. Found a pack of 1957 unc at $800. Seemed silly to buy these, break them up (a crime), and spend that amount of money when I could give a 40% half or something else. Could not find others. Anyone have a source of AU's at a decent percentage above green sheet?

What would 50 proof clad Kennedy's or Ike's cost me?

The kids are 10-11 yo, visual, and I need to compete with video games, etc.

Would be cool to give out lower grade 1913 Type One and/or Type Two nickels next year as it would be the 100th anniversary of the coin at the time. Could also talk about the 1913 Liberty Nickels that will be 100 years old too.

Not a coin, but what about fractional currency?

Might be expensive, but there are a few nice designs that can probably be had on the cheap (although of course, they wont be super nice)

I found that when I showed kids paper money that was actually demoninated in fractional amounts (3c, 5c, 10c, 15c, 25c, 50c) they were amazed that we ever had such a thing. I usually used coins from the same time period to show them the difference, and explained why they were ever produced in the first place. The "chatter" it started was infectious, and the designs are different enough that I got lots of comments ranging from, "Man, that dude looked grumpy", to "Wow, that is so pretty", and about everywhere in between.

I second the nomination of giving out blue Whitman post-wheat penny folders or Jefferson folders with maybe a starter coin or 2 inserted. They are still collectible out of circulation, and would be a great way for kids to spend some time, maybe hit their parents' jars or banks for change to look thru, and maybe even spend some quality time with parents or grandparents. It's how I started off many, many years ago......
Where else could a kid get so much bang for $25 bucks these days besides a box of pennies?

Whitman folders can be found used for a decent price. One store near me has all used Whitman blue folders (I guess from collections traded-in) for 50 cents each. And Chief Coin & Supply sells their used ones for under $2 each, plus a volume discount, I believe.

If you combined such a giveaway with links to quality on-line sites where students could look up values/conditions/grading pics, and possibly varieties & errors, WHO KNOWS what budding coin collecting careers you might just nourish?!

I think the kids would really like new, crisp Twenty Dollar bills! My Grandson's 6th
grade class is 11 students, might not be too expensive! image

But at 45 students I guess that would be out, 'eh?

Red Books as mentioned would be great. I can send some if you decide to go that
way. I have three from the 90's that I could send.
