Guess the grades, win some cash. ---- Grades IN! Winner in the last post! ----

Two of my recent Soler & Llach wins are going through the final stages of grading ATS with results available in the next few days. With snail mail from Canada taking up to 3 weeks and cost of shipping being ridiculous, I decided to repeat the previous giveaway format (the one that MacCrimmon nailed!) and as a reward for being the closest to the sum of actual grades I will send a PayPal gift for 30 bucks to the winner.

Here's the previous contest to get a feel for the format.

A tiny caveat: if the coin bodybags (and if you remember my original post when I received the coins, you might remember my suspicions about the Zacatecas piece) it's worth 0 points, so keep that in mind when putting-in your opinions.

Good luck!

1810 is already graded and encapsulated (they wouldn't tell me the grade until both coins go through quality control, though) and the 1821 is "Pending", which means they need to research it either by themselves, or by sending it to an independent 3rd party specialist, which might take another week.

Zacatecas is still being researched. I should just send the graders an e-mail with the calbeto number and catalog image to help them along. If they determined authenticity, attribution should be easy.

If I had to guess, I'd go 62/3 and 45 if both grade and the 1810 gets into a well-deserved (in my opinion) MS slab.

Worst case scenario would probably be 58 - BB.

I agree that the 1810 should grade MS

The 1821 zs remains a very difficult coin to grade based on striking issues and the wear patterns and imho tend to be undergraded

Ok, so we're locking down all the responses because there's a grade update.

The 1810 graded AU58 image I just don't get it. There is no break in the luster and the coin is dripping with it with a thin, translucent layer of pale yellow toning. Surfaces are clean with barely any hairlines. Weak strike - sure. But NGC doesn't normally downgrade for strike anomalies. This coin looks 100% better than a lot of MS61-62 blast white and often hairlined pieces I see surface on eBay, NEN, Heritage, and other venues (like this 1784, for example currently on eBay). Bah. I'm doing vodka shots tonight.

Research on the Zacatecas piece is going to be at least another couple of weeks. They need to get the experts involved.

    << <i>first grade posted on page 2 >>

"Page 2" is a rather meaningless concept, since with customization, we could all conceivably have different posts-per-page settings. (I usually put updates on things like this in the first post, for that reason.)

    AU58 on the first, huh?

Woohoo! I'm 50% right so far! image

Let's see another AU58, and I'll win... I'll win... umm... gee, what will I win, again?

Oh yeah- thirty bux. Wow. You sir, are a generous soul. Thanks for the chance.

Oh, and hey- nice coins, there, regardless of the technical/numerical grade. image

There is some friction on the obverse but I've seen more on other MS graded examples, I still think it deserves an MS grading.

I have a suggestion. Roman is clearly annoyed with that first grade to be sending money to some winner on top, and he's already proven his generosity, so I suggest that the person who's the farther apart from the realized grades, will be the one who will pay the winner. For instance, in the first coin, shroom is a candidate to pay, with his MS63 prediction. image

Haha, Dimitri. I love the idea! However I gave my word to deliver the reward to the winner, so Shroom is off the hook image

After a rough night of participating in a taste test of my brother's new home-made vodka I feel much better about the coin (and worse about my brother's idea of making home-made vodka). It's not like my opinion of it changed.

Thank you, thank you, thank you Roman, you are too genorous,
but I must admit, I would have said AU58 on both just like the Lord
said, but he said them first, so I backed off the second one with the
AU55, really cool stuff by the way. Anyhow thanks for the oppourtunity.

Wow, that's kind of you, Steve, but if you won, you won. Maybe you were gonna say the same thing as me and then changed your mind when you saw my post, but I reckon that still counts? Regardless of what y'all decide, thanks. It's a generous giveaway, and a little cash incentive certainly makes a GTG thread all the more fun!
