Double dip a comin, how does this efffect card prices?

Seems like some cards are getting their legs back underneath (price wise) from the first dip. Will the next create another buyers market?

There are going to be more and more super low prices on 50's and 60's mid grade cards. The slabs will sell
for less than what they cost to get graded.
For all you modern collectors - I hope you are doing it "For The Love of The Game" as someone once said in a movie, because the cards are worthless.

A double dip recession is what he is talking about.

Ahhhh... so. I'm beginning to think wealthy people love a down economy.
  • Dpeck100Dpeck100 Posts: 10,912 ✭✭✭✭✭
There are not many wealthy people that like this down economy.

  • jeffcbayjeffcbay Posts: 8,949 ✭✭✭✭
Wealthy people who have the money set aside to buy things like (for example) baseball cards for pennies on the dollar, or property, or struggling companies... LOVE a down economy. The thing about a double-dip "W" economy, is that it always bounces back up. Of course, I don't need to tell you that.

We are just a few days into a hard fall in the stock market. Asset prices like cards and other tangible items don't react as quick as stock prices so it has yet to affect cards and other hard assets. It will if stock prices stay down for any length of time.

Oddly enough, I had my best years financially in 2008-09-10. I work in the high voltage electrical industry, and as long as there are still wicked storms, and people who don't feel like turning off their A/C, then business is good! image
  • I'm suprised wax boxes have held up so well in this economy, last 5 years. Like 88/89 Fleer basketball. Or 84/85 opc hockey. I bet you this double dip is going to create some good buying opportunities in certain areas.

Card prices will go down - no doubt about it.

Interesting take on it though...I think CU will still prosper through all of this because all those raw collections out there, when people need money, they're gonna need to get these raw cards PSA graded to get top dollar...so there may be a lot more vintage graded cards coming into the marketplace in the relative future.
  • Lower to mid end stuff will take a hit for sure, but really high end stuff should continue to steadily appreciate just like it has for decades. People who can easily afford to spend $50k or more on a baseball card just to put it in their collection generally aren't nearly as affected by the economy as the average collector.

I don't think there will be much effect. Most newer stuff will continue to drop....but it always has. The majority from 5 years ago you can buy now for 10-20%. Maybe 5%..if that...of the newer cards hold their value.

Same with graded cards, a little over 5 years ago, almost all modern PSA 10's where in the $15 range. You can buy HOF'ers all day long for less then half of that now.

Don't collect as an investment...unless it is in proven winners. Even then, you are likely better buying things outside of card market.

Did April 27th act as a stimulus for your line of work?

There's actually quite a bit of modern stuff that is far from worthless, graded or ungraded. Some of the low numbered 90's inserts are going for pretty good amounts right now.

I don't know about it being a good time to still buy Gold American Eagles, I think we will see gold pull back 10 to 15% here in the next month or so if Europe doesn't collapse. But that didn't stop me from snagging a 2009 1 Oz Gold Eagle this week for about $1600 after eBay Bucks and cashback. Now if I didn't have a nice stack already of gold that I had been picking up since $650 an ounce I would never have bought this one.

I think the definition of what a recession is needs to be redefined in this now "World Economy" myself. I really don't feel or believe this country ever got out of the first one when you look around all the smoke, mirrors and BS numbers that .gov has put out to make things look better. I really see us going into a full blown World Depression here in the next 12 months. So expect lots of fire sales on collectables when people are starving to death and they either will sell those Mantles cards or die. (Ok I hope it doesn't come to this but dang is the World in a messed up situation right now)

US credit rating downgrade happened tonight. Short term the market may have this priced in and we will find out Monday. Long term this is awful as no country has ever lost their AAA status and regained it. I am not surprised by the move but no fun to hear either way.

Double Dip is definitely coming. Mondays markets should be interesting to watch, but honestly, since most card buying is discretionary to begin with, those who have saved up and are in a good shape financially wont really see the dip as bad as those that havent been saving or are in a bad position financially.

If we're in a recession/depression (or on the verge of one)....why are people still driving mercedes, bmw's, etc? You'd never guess a depression by all the luxury cars on the road.

Why are ipads or ipods selling by the millions (or kindles?)? Or ps3's, wii's. It seems like people have a lot of "toys" for this recession.

I couldn't get into, 30+ minute waits, 3 different middle of the road (Chili's type restaurants) that were packed out on Monday. Ended up eating at Saltgrass - good steak. Had to wait 15 minutes at 6:30p last night (Friday) for Gengis Grill. When we left, the wait was over an hour.

At least around here, the losses seem to be mostly on paper. I'm not seeing collections popping up on Craigslist at an unusual rate or at lower than normal prices.

Agreed !!! --- For those smarter than the rest of us , the one thing that some of us can tell , is what a trojan horse looks like. Its presented as a great gift , but destruction is the intented goal , and for fools the result. The only thing that evil people need to succeed is for good people people to do nothing. ---- Sonny

  • The credit downgrade is an absolute joke. I had the pleasure of meeting Senator Bernie Sanders of VT last year when he visited my nieces school, he was the most genuine politician I have ever had the pleasure of meeting regardless of party or belief system.

His comments today on his facebook:

Sen. Sanders on S&P downgrade: I find it interesting to see S&P so vigilant today in downgrading the US credit rating. Where were they 4 years ago when they, and other credit rating agencies, helped cause this horrendous recession by providing AAA ratings to worthless sub-prime mortgage securities on behalf of Wall Street investment firms? Where were they last December when Congress and the White House drove up the national debt by $700 billion by extending Bush's tax breaks for the rich?

Add cellphones to that list...my goodness, there's no reason for these lengthy contracts and expensive 'smart' phones.
  • There seems to be a real disconnect going on. Everyone still wants the latest smart phones, gadgets. Remember the ps3 online outage? 70 million people online? Why are so many people playing games if its the end of the world?

You'd think something like a kindle would get canceled in a recession. Or the latest smart phone or something. Who can afford to keep up with every new gadget?

I read the other day that homeownership is at its lowest level since 1965. Its hard to imagine where things are really going to bottom out in 5-10 years.
  • Why is everyone so convinced that a double-dip recession is coming? Just a couple of weeks ago, the Dow Jones was doing fine (around 12500). Back in March 2009, it got as low as 6600.
  • When you have staffers from the White House admitting that the possibility of a doulble dip is one in three, we are nearing trouble. With all the debt talk going on, it really does not take a genius to see that our economy will not as much gov't money flowing thru it in the near future. That will have a slowing effect in its self. That coupled with a credit downgrade, leads many to believe that the double dip is a comin.

To be an official recession, we must have two quarters in a row with negative GDP. Last quarter our GDP dropped to 1.3. We could see a negative GDP in the next quarter. If so, we are halfway there.

Here is my two cents, we will continue to have a floudering economy until we revamp our manufacturing sectors. We need more 'Made in the USA' labels in our closets and cabinets. If we keep buying cheap China goods, we will get what we deserve. In my household, we will go with less American made goods, over an abundance of cheap foriegn made goods. I will not buy a happy meal for my girls simple because I don;t want them getting used to being rewarded with a cheap chinese made plastic toy for eating an unhealty meal. I get them a #1 super-sized instead. lol

<<<I really see us going into a full blown World Depression here in the next 12 months. >>>

I'm not sure it happens that quick, but I agree. I think 30-40 years from now we will look back on the period between 2008-2020 as the second Great Depression. Of course, you'll only hear a few guys on TV say we are in the middle of a such an event (Peter Schiff, Marc Faber, Noriel Roubini to name a few). And as always, other TV pundits will laugh off their predictions and say they are crazy.
How many more times do these guys have to be right before we start listening to them?

At some point our country needs to take economic policy decisions out of the hands of Congress and put them into the hands of a select group of people that can make sound decisions for our country without having to worry about re-election.

Jim Sinclair made the crazy prediction when gold was $300 per ounce that gold would hit $1650 in 2011. The guy was dead on.
He now predicts gold will easily hit $5,000 ounce.

Peter Schiff and Marc Faber and Jim Rogers are other guys who understand what's going on with our economy and the price of gold.

I agree that the Dow Jones could crash again this week. But it's hard to predict what will happen after that. Even experienced financial analysts don't know. It wouldn't surprise me if on December 31, the stock market will show a net gain for the year.
  • I don't know if you guys follow Wall St data (or whether it's meaningful), but auto sales fell off a cliff in 08. From 16 million to, 9.5? in a few years. If that's not a depression, what is?

Housing starts is another one. These charts look like a depression.
