Reflections on 1987 Donruss Rookies

You can pick up a set of 1987 Donruss Rookies for less than $5 these days easy. I have seen cases sell for $2.50 a set. I just opened a set, and I forgot how many great cards are in there. The player selection really spans the mid to late 80's, with many prominent RC's, XRC's or in some cases, what could be considered second or even third year RC's. In no particular order, here are the stand out cards IMO.

- Greg Maddux - HOF, one of best ever
- R. Palmeiro - HOF stats, roids tarnished him forever more than likely
- Matt Williams - semi HOF, all around amazing ball player, this is his XRC
- B. Santiago - one of top catchers for decade, who else throws runners out from his knees consistently? And remember the hit streak?
- David Cone - semi HOF
- Fred McGriff - probable HOF due to steroid backlash, this is his second year XRC
- Kevin Seitzer - XRC, quality ball player
- Bo Jackson - second year RC, once in a lifetime athlete
- Devon White - XRC, another very good ball player
- Ellis Burks - XRC, great ball player for almost a decade
- Mike Greenwell - Red Sox messiah before injuries
- Mark McGwire - HOF if public gives him a pass for saving baseball, arguably his third year RC
other notables: Terry Steinbach, Dave Magadan, John Smiley, Mr. FF himself Billy Ripken

And a cool Clemente mini puzzle!!

Kiss me once, shame on you.
Kiss me twice.....let's party.

  • Bonds was in the 86 The Rookies set and 87 Donruss Base. Not the 87 The Rookies.

I saved up my allowance for 11 weeks to buy the pre-cursor to that set (the '86 Donruss Rookies). I tried so hard to hold on to that complete set, but had to trade the Wally Joyner card. I think I got an '85 Donruss Mattingly for it.

Those are sharp looking cards. High gloss, good stock and worth every bit of my $22!

Let's not forget that the #1 Mark McGwire is very condition-sensitive since it's the first card in the very tightly-wrapped cello inside that box. Out of 2,296 total graded, there are only 38 10s (about 1.6%). Tough card.

Maddux, McGwire, and Palmeiro should make the hall eventually. Bo Jackson was on pace for it as well.
