I've seen alternative names but usually the animal is the same or a close relative. For example, I've seen boar instead of pig and hare instead of rabbit. So, I guess it's all the same.

I'm guessing it's a marketing ploy since a mouse is cute (think Mickey Mouse) while a rat isn't so cute.
