Somebody actually spent a Carter Quarter (ie SBA)

My wife and I took a trip to the fast food joint to get some breakfast and as we came to the window to pay I reached for a quarter in the tray but it seemed a little big. I took a second look and low and behold it was a 1979 Susan B Anthony dollar. I don't know if I recieved it as a quarter and thus netted a tidy 75 cent windfall but I almost spent it as a quarter. Anyway, I haven't seen one of those in circulation in quite a while.

Funny, I've never heard of a SBA dollar mentioned as a Carter Quarter. Took me a moment to make the connection. image

I don't know how widespread that term spread but it goes to the point of why it was not to popular. I think there was a problem with people confusing it with a quarter. Also, the beauty (or lack there of) of the coin obverse was also a factor.

You got me curious. What would qualify as the right time?

When I feel like explaining what it is to a waitress, teller etc., cashing it in with other change at the bank, or when I dont have to hide it from the wife and loose 75 cents, when I am buying gas for cash instead of using a card. Or when I feel like watching what the cashier does when there is no place in the register--or they really think they have found somethingimage--------BigE

One man's trash is often another man's treasure. I often spend the golden dollars for coffee to do my part and I am still surprised that they take it with no hesitation. I do believe they take them straight to the bank after that though since I have never received one in change.

I have some Anthonys and some Ikes in my car to spend, but like BigE says, it will take some effort and explanation just to spend them, and it's mostly a function of wanting to see their reactions.

When I order a box of the Sac Dollars through the bulk distribution program, my fiancee' likes to spend the ones I don't keep because the clerks have seldom seen them.image

Given the popularity of today's dollar coin I'm not so sure about that conventional wisdom...

One time I tried to spend a SBA on a 50 cent item and the lady said I needed to give her another one! image

Given that Gasparro's original choice for a younger SBA was rejected by those who favored the accepted design, what would a modern Lady Liberty look like?

How much does Susan B. Anthony resemble this lady on a 2,000-year old coin?

    Susan B. Anthony
    Cleopatra

And both could have used the surname "Anthony".

I never heard of "Carter dollar", is a Peace dollar now a "Harding dollar"?.

The last one I had I donated it to a charity that was taking collections on the street thinking that it was a quarter. I realized what I'd done when I got home.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I would not suggest anyone use them to pay a tip. The wait staff might think you stiffed them with some quarters and who knows what they will serve you next time you come in.

Susan B. Anthony invented the time machine too?

Not sure if I've ever gotten one in change, though I have spent them. Used to get quite a few at the car wash, now it's mostly the pres. dollars. Never had a problem spending one, though the cashiers always look at them. Personally, as a cashier, I'd much rather have to count dollar coins at the end of the day than a bunch of wrinkled up dollar bills which are easier to miscount.

I've slowly been spending $500 in Kennedy halves and a smaller number of SBA's - doing my part to get rid of the paper $1. image
