Rick, from what I've read, you seem like a good guy to deal with - honest and fair. Having said that, this may be seen as an unpopular question by those you deal with, but here goes anyway. Why is it acceptable for you to promote your services outside of the proper forum? Anyone else who pimps/spams their product/services here gets called on it, and rightfully so. Why do you get a pass? Your prospective customers are well familiar with the BST Forum.

    Honest question, btw.

Never bought from Rick, so I have no dog in the fight (sorry Mike Vick). I would think that Rick is offering a service, just like Bobby from VCP. He is not actually posting cards for sale here. The guys that had paintings and other artwork have had a pass here too.

In fact I think he should have a clickable link to his ebay stuff in his signature line, not just the web addie. Most here do this too and it is perfectly acceptable, if you don't want to go, don't click, but it is easier than doing the cut and paste.

it's a fine line, we all need to take a step back once in awhile and just accept that it's not a blatant attempt to spam the forum.

people post here about amazing finds, gonna get 'em graded!!, check out this awesome card!!, i know and old guy with a monster collection!!, etc, etc., and it often leads to transacting amongst members.

Rick is just flexing his muscles. image

Regardless of whether it's considered spam or not considered spam...it's a heckuva deal for an honest, respected seller such as Rick to offer only 5% commission on a consignment sale.

I'm sure I need the money more than Rick (LOL) but even I wouldn't do all that work for a measly 5%, and it is a lot of work doing the scans, taking the pics, typing the descriptions, shipping the orders, corresponding with the buyers, etc, etc.

If I was looking to sell some cards thru a consignment seller, I'd take advantage of this deal in a heartbeat.

Sorry but I see no problem with this gesture. To me it seems like he is just trying to help fellow collectors. If I was going to the National I would not hesitate to take him up on this offer.

Like stevek said, it is a lot of work doing scans, taking pics, listing the item, and so on. I am sure when you take into consideration all the time and effort, 5% is a bargain for you and maybe even a loss for him.

My only question is what if the card does not sell. Do you need to pay the listing fee before getting your card back?

I just wish I was going to the National so I could take him up on the offer.

TNP, I understand what you're saying -- and you're right it's an honest question.

I don't think it's any different than group subs or group rips. Such services benefit the board "group" as a whole.

Plus, Rick contributes much more than the occasional offer -- he chimes in on plenty of threads here.

  • Rick just sold some nice stuff for myself and Mr. Vintage and we have more stuff for him to sell. He lists stuff fast and effectively. I think it also benefits the National for him to have the money there for people to pick up because there is a great chance that it will be spread to the dealers at the show. The more cash flow, the better for the hobby.lol(sad that's what the hobby has almost came to). I hopefully have a pretty big item coming up for you Rick in the next week. I just gotta get it back from BGS.

IMO the original post belongs on this board rather than the BST board. It's a general card-related service, not a specific card/group of cards transaction offer. I don't want this type of post on the BST board, because it pushes down the card deals that I look for on that board. Similarly, a snipe service offer, sports card magazine subscription offer, ebay-competitive venue announcement, etc. belongs on this board rather than BST.

Buyers and sellers likely appreciate their posts not being pushed off the first page of BST by threads that aren't for direct card transactions.

Rick is someone import to the card collecting hobby.

If anything he is helping collectors on this board so I say move on.

His shipping is just as fast as mine and in all honesty that says a lot.

I think it is great to have a major player posting on these boards.

Good luck at the National Rick!!
  • A nice service IMO...but I had to chuckle when he is mentioned as a "major player". He is definitely a major "player"

  • we are bringing our 1979 OPC Gretzky RC SGC 98 Gem 10 POP 1 to the National - Come see it at booth #1033

    2 quick questions:
    1) do you think it will cross to a PSA 10 ?
    2) would you rather have it become a PSA 10 POP 2 ( there is only 1 PSA 10 currently )
or have it remain the only SGC 98 10 ( currently POP 1 ) ?

  • 1. I say no, I just think that an underlying bias would prevent it from going into a PSA 10 holder.

    2. I would leave it as is, it has the perfect grade and your name on it, does it get better than that?

    Scoreboard Malfunction
  • It's an incredible card, and compared to the PSA 10 it has been discussed at length that yours is a better example of a GEM. It very well may cross making it a Pop 2, but I think having a Pop 1 brings it to another level.

It certainly is a show piece, and will have tons of attention at the National.

It really depends if your keeping it, or selling it. For now leave it as is, and see what happens at the National.

    1) I think it would cross.

    2) Keep it SGC -- IMO the 98 grade is better than the 10. SGC does a better job grading the '79 OPCs.

Mine will go in the mail tomorrow.

Whole bunch of stuff. Low grade stars to high grade nobodies. And all the junk in between.

This will be some of the cards that I have multiples of. Hope it goes well.

So far I have packed up 121 graded cards. I still might add a bunch of raw cards. I will see what fits in the box and how much time I have in the morning.
