So, who's been requesting Genuine Secure Plus??

In a recent email from Don, he notes there has been demand for it.

Why would there be??
"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. (Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose, Cardinal.

    I noticed that as well and did not really get it but after thinking about...maybe for the stuff in the 1700s...1793 Chain Cent, Liberty Cap, 1796 stuff etc...I could see it being used for that I guess. Beyond the rare and expensive stuff, probably not a high demand?

    I have a rare gold coin in a genuine holder - what would I gain by spending $$ for Secure Plus?

    You know I'm a geek most of the time, doc... but it wasn't me requesting "genuine secure plus". The "brand" is enough. I'd prefer a "net grade" on the reverse.

    No seriously - why would I spend $600 for the sniffer plus shipping (plus the risk of loss)?

    What do I gain in value by doing so?

    I don't see a reason at this point, unless you think there's putty on the coin.

    You may not gain anything, but buyers down the road will. It could prevent crack- outs getting regraded into "real" holders. ? Or, it could help with stolen coins that are still high value even in "genuine" condition...lots of reasons...

    Time is the great equalizer when it comes to "technology". Ultimately, all information is free. It may take decades, but the premiums you pay today will be the standard and not options of tomorrow. Just sayin'!

    I had submitted a coin under one of the old quarterly specials for secure plus grading recently. It came back bagged because, at the time, secure plus submittals could not be graded as genuine. I would have preferred it if it came back in a genuine slab instead of a flip. I'm glad PCGS changed the rule but I never requested it after the fact.

    Many doctored coins tend to ‘turn’ over time and subsequent chemical reactions can be horrifying or just unsightly. The sniffer may identify added substances that should be removed before coins are encapsulated for a long period of time. I suggest that all coins submitted, which are valued above $500 each, be under the SecurePlus program.

    My guess would be that since PCGS will only note one error code (even if there is more than one issue with a coin), many people may want expensive coins in "genuine" holders to be run through the sniffer to see if the toning is artificial and meant to cover additional problems that may not be visible form images alone. This is just a guess though.
