Paying Premiums For Silver Bars?

What are your guys opinions on paying premiums for certain kinds of silver bars. Do you stick to bars that you can get closest to spot or will you shell out a little extra for a Engelhard of J+M bar? Will the premium you pay hold out in the long run?

  • I like Engelhard and J+M bars, but do not pay a premium for them.

I like to sell for a premium though.

I will only pay a premium for .999 Silver Art Bars, but not for common bullion bars. Premiums can be quite substantial.image

Engelhard, particularly old pour bars, tend to carry a significant premium over other bars. That said, sometimes I find a coin dealer who sells all bullion at the same price, and I'm able to buy them without the premium. The best way to answer your own question is to look at ebay completed sales.

Where can you find them to buy without paying a premium?

Last week i bought a little silver. I went to the local coin shop and asked if they had any maple leafs, or engelhard or sunshine mint bars, my personal preferences. The lady checked the safe and said that they did not. So i rummaged through their generic 1 ounce silver bar box and ended up finding 4 engelhards and 1 sunshine mint bar for no extra premium than what they charge for genaric bars.

Doesnt hurt to rummage through the generic box if your pm store has one.

My local dealer treats all silver bars and rounds the same. I picked up a few Engelhard old pour 10oz bars along with the three ounce mystery bar recently.

I won't pay a premium for later Engelhard or JM stamped bars.

Even the later Engelhard "P" prefixed poured bars are commonly available. If you pay a premium for them you are not likely to recover that premium when you sell.

Early and odd sized poured Engelhard and JM are sought by bar collectors. They can sell for substantially more than spot. Searching closed ebay auctions is a good way to learn how much more than spot they're worth.

Below are my two newest additions that will typically cost a fair bit more than spot.
