I was told by more than one dealer that Rattlers carry a 10% premium over other PCGS holders.
Really?
I was going to try for an upgrade on one, but was "talked out of it" due to the fact that even if it did upgrade one point with the loss of the Rattler I would "gain nothing".
Wow, just wow.
Now I am wondering what kind of percentage do regular OGH carry?

Once you slab a raw coin, the coin no longer matters... the plastic becomes your collectible! Have you ever heard Drunner say "Hey, I collect this series?" NO! All you'll ever hear him say is "I collect dollies!"

Let me guess...the dealer was trying to sell you a rattler and He probably mumbled something about them being rare and/or under graded.

The truth is rattlers are not in themselves worth a premium nor are they invariably undergraded. Some rattlers house excellent coins and others are overgraded product while most are correctly graded. Premiums depend on the coins themselves.

I disagree. Unless the coin is a dog, I can see the rattler mystique adding 10% to the liquid price of a coin easily.

Wow! I bought this MS-65, Red 1864 large motto two cent piece in a rattle holder at the spring Baltimore show. I guess I got a bargain.



The thing that attracted me was the fact that since it had been this holder for more thna 20 years indicated that the color was as stable as this type of color can be.

I'll pay a premium for OGH holders on occasion, but I won't pay more than a 5% premium unless it's a 3 or a 3.5 slab.

An MS65RD two center looking like that in a new holder at $700 [wag]

or

An MS65RD two center looking like that in a rattler at $770


I know which one I'd be buying.

See if they carry a 10% premium if you try to sell one. Don't hold your breath while waiting for that extra 10%.
