Is this registry influence? Buying plastic, or just a hot market?

1875 8 Reales sold for $1,913 on eBay (PCGS MS-65)

I don't think i've seen two grand being forked over for a common late in the series Cap and Ray before. Even in MS 65.

Insanity? Foresight? It seems that there were three heavy bidders so, time will ultimately tell! I hope that my Palestine gets that hot image

It seems just about any 19th C. coin in 65 or better is making big money these days. I had to pay a fair price for the 1806 PF65 (P-1326) Penny in Stacks yesterday, but got the 1697 6d in MS63 for what I thought was cheap, it is the most common varitey of the 1697's but still...

    China demand?

First it was 8 Reales, now its minors. Look at the high-grade common 1/2 Reales in the just-completed Ponterio sale.

I agree with you its China demand......what happened with 1/2 reales?

Seeing MS64 and MS65 common dates bring-in moon money, quite a few sellers decided to list their common slabbed cap'n'rays. Ebay has a number of MS60-63 pieces up right now trying to capitalize on what is perceived a hot market.

Here are some of the recent sales:

    1875 Go PCGS-MS65: $1,913

    1877 Ca PCGS-MS64: $1,011
    1892 Ca NGC-MS64: $903

    1875 Go PCGS-MS63: $563
    1890 Go NGC-MS63: $431
    1887 Zs NGC-MS63: $375
    1882 Mo NGC-MS63: $375

    1875 Ga NGC-MS62: $345
    1877 Do NGC-MS62: $345
    1892 Ho NGC-MS62: $331
    1876 Ga NGC-MS62: $330
    1875 Go NGC-MS62: $286
    1892 Zs NGC-MS62: $283
    1895 Go NGC-MS62: $276
    1894 Ho NGC-MS62: $275
    1882 Go NGC-MS62: $266
    1893 Ca NGC-MS62: $256
    1881 Go NGC-MS62: $255
    1887 Mo NGC-MS62: $225
    1896 Go NGC-MS62: $222
    1894 Mo NGC-MS62: $205

I can only imagine how many 1870+ Cap and Rays are currently @ PCGS and NGC as a result of these prices.

Here are some current BIN auctions:

    1897 Zs NGC-MS64: $1,100
    1868 Go NGC-MS64: $1,100
    1897 Go NGC-MS64: $1,100
    1891 Mo NGC-MS64: $1,100

    1885 Ga NGC-MS63: $750
    1896 Go NGC-MS63: $550
    1889 Mo NGC-MS63: $350
    1880 Go NGC-MS63: $350
    1891 Cn NGC-MS63: $350
    1885 Ca NGC-MS63: $350

    1893 Mo NGC-MS62: $298
    1890 Cn NGC-MS62: $294
    1893 Cn NGC-MS62: $294
    1897 Mo NGC-MS62: $293

    1893 Ca NGC-MS61: $220
    1889 Mo NGC-MS61: $200
    1891 Mo NGC-MS61: $195

PCGS seems to be bringing a higher premium than NGC-certified coins of the same grade (about 30% more than NGC). There seems to be an expectation to price MS64 @ around $1,000; MS63 @ $350; MS62 @ $300.

    Think these prices will hold?

I'm going with hot market. Just got my Stacks Bowers ANA catalog and the estimates are pretty high for high grade 8R's in better grades. Wish now I didn't sell all of mine in 2001 to fund my German setsimage

There are plenty in lower MS grade....but 65 and higher they are genuinely tough to locate imo.

NGC MS63 vs PCGS MS65, apples and oranges. A PCGS certified gem is a gem, and yes, the market was ,is and will be hot for them. I'm 100% with Mr Zohar.

Not to say that you're not doing the right thing Roman. You enjoy varieties to the max, and your spectrum is so broad that you'd have to limit yourself severely if you only went for 65s. But ANY silver world crown in MS65 is hot. So are gold ounces, especially lately, certified MS-PR65 and higher, even the so called low mintage bullion (5000-10000 pieces etc) coins. I happen to have a 1975 Krugerrand PCGS PR67DCAM, mintage 5100, anybody? image

The market is hot, started late last year. Makes it tough to buy and difficult to resist selling. The going price for a ms65 is slightly under 2K and it does not matter about mint, rariety, or date.

A quick summary of the pop reports of both services for cap and ray 8 reales shows the following:
ms65 pop 362 or about 6.5% of the total pop
ms66 pop 70 or about 1.3% of the total pop

The prices for mint state is likely raising the prices for ms 63 and 64 as well.

Yes, 4 coins have been graded as MS 67. two from the zacatecas mint and one from Guadalajara and Oaxaca mints.

I would expect to see a surge in grading and see what shakes out between the mint states and those that get the dreaded genuine.

I have a zacatecas graded 67 by NGC- I bought it raw and submitted it-common date but a very nice example- I rarely see 8R 65 and higher

    Very nice, Coinkat image

And the recent sales bring out the big guns. Here's a PCGS 66 OGH that was recently listed.

Anyone wants to guess the final price?
  • coinkatcoinkat Posts: 23,615 ✭✭✭✭✭
    probably 2600 or so

This series is still misunderstood- not that I claim to understand it

An 1891zs or 1893zs 8R is not that tough and there are some very attractive examples available and collectors that want an 8R as a type coin will chase these instead of a date that is truly rare

I think the 66 will be a little over $3K. The last couple of auctions prices have climbed quickly to the upper $2K.

I agree the series is being turned on it's head by the fascination with grading. Price is based more on grade rather than rariety and condition.
  • coinkatcoinkat Posts: 23,615 ✭✭✭✭✭
already at $2K with 4 days left- it could go for over 3

huge money. I don't think green holder premium applies to the darkside like it does the US, mostly hot market.

Very nice 1891 PI, super strike.
