So what is left to do with the Bear Collection?

BearBear Posts: 18,953 ✭✭✭
As you can see, the gold section has been greatly increased. Still on my want list is

the very difficult $20 Liberty head in PCGS MS 64+ or in MS-65. Most samples looked

at are too badly marked up, especially on the face, to consider. I have found that even in the

higher grades, where the small marks are located is very important. You have one on the cheek

or a cut on the nose and it is, to me, most distracting.

In the silver coins, I am still looking for a nice 1953 A/R Quarter and or Half. Very difficult to find with

good luster, good color and overal nice appearance. Oh sure, there are a few very high graded ones

out there , but I am not quite ready to go to the moon paying for them. At least, not yet. When you

see non toned silver coins, it is because I have determined, that they have most if not all of their original

skin and I find that lends an appealing look to the coin, rather then the bright , shiny dipped look. The

skin makes for a more mellow luster and does not overwhelm the design with the glare of shiny luster.

As for the commems, I have added two and now have a total of four. As you may notice, I have a strong

predilection for warm color toning.Golds, pinks, light tan. Non toned commems, even in high grades of

, always seem to lack personality and character. After a while I find that the snow white commems,

all start to look alike to me ,. For those who collect commems, please do not worry that I am going to be

competing with you at the next Heritage Auction. I am only looking for 2 more commems and then that portion

of the collection will be concluded.

Now, not everyone will agree with me on what I like or what I am collecting. But this has been constructed as my

own personal journey and I wished to share my impressions, thoughts and collecting habits with you all. It is not

often that so many can share in the building of a collection and I wanted you to know how I evaluated each coin and

why I selected certain coins and toning. If this journey with me has been enjoyable or entertaining or helpful in some

small way, then I will be very pleased and the effort will have been well rewarded. There will probably be several of

these updates from time to times, as the collections grows, develops and even changes. You will have noticed that a number

of coins have been deleted as being too snow white and bland, while others took a good picture but in hand appeared to dark.

A collection that is not subject to constant pruning and upgrading, is a static collection and is really not much fun to play with.

    Missing 3 things IMHO:

    - More comments on each coin. I like looking at them but I think the collection would be so much better if your exact thoughts as to "why this coin?" were present on each.

    - I would like a shout out to the dealer or location of where you acquired each coin as that would aid me in finding something of similar appeal.

    - Lastly, does the collection have a signature coin? Perhaps the blue seated proof, I suppose. But I just want to make sure *you think it has a signature coin*. If not, perhaps that is the elusive double eagle you are looking for.

Just don't buy the 1904 one. Make sure it is double approved.

Several people asked me, If I could write a series as to why I selected each coin

in the Bear Collection as well as who I bought the coin from. It seems like a good

idea so I am working on it and it should start to roll in a few days.

What is left, is to enjoy the collection.... even write about it and perhaps show it at a major show. It is certainly bragging level..... Cheers, RickO

I have mentioned a Draped Bust Coin with Heraldic Eagle a few times but you keep ignoring me so I guess that does not interest you much...I really like them.

To acquire one that wouldn't look out of place in that collection is probably way out of his budget, I'd guess.

It is not that I do not like such coins, it is just that it would not be in

keeping with the criteria of the set. Also, cost is an important

consideration. I am attempting to keep a balance, in the overall

appearance of coins in the collection, and If I could not afford to

buy the earlier coin in an appropriate high grade, it would indeed

look out of place in the more modern series.

Ahhhh, good point. But if you had not purchased so many high end MODERN Walkers you might have been able to pull it off? Just poking the Fuzzy Bear with a stick here. image

Here is another idea for the Fuzzy Bear, something else I like...a high end MS66 or better Isabella Quarter! That could be a great coin for the collection. I think I saw an MS66 at one of the upcoming auctions or on a big dealer's website this week. It would be high end, commemorative(but not the typical), high demand, cool coin...if you found the right example I think it would fit quite nicely in your collection. Thoughts?

I am in the process of obtaining a high grade Seated Liberty Half CC Mint.

That should tie up most of the cash set aside for this project for the time being.

If I did get another commem, I would lean towards the Lafayette Dollar rather

then the quarter. I like Biiiiiggggggggg!image I had just realized, that my collection

did not have a single CC coin in it, other then the two Morgan Dollars.. How

could I be so absent minded.

You just keep doing the hard work of finding them, paying for them, getting great pictures and posting them and we'll do the rest image

I'd put some fresh buns in that oven-- an Unc Julia Tyler First Spouse coin (Mintage 2,861), a 2008 Judicial $100 platinum coin (mintage 2876) and an instant classic like the 2009 UHR coin or 1995 W proof silver eagle.

I am curious ; since your sharing the rebuilding of your collection ,

how are you "disposing" of coins you are culling from the set ?

Selling them at a loss "wholesale" ?

Selling back to the selling dealer @ a small loss ?

Selling them via future Auctions ?

how the heck are you making them "go away " ?

Bear has only "culled out" some "lower end" Walkers so the loss is pretty negligible regardless at this point.

Back to the dealers. Some were on approval when the pictures went up. Others were traded back

some I just waved my magic wand and they disappeared. There were not that many coins really.

Perhaps 5 or 6 coins in all, so far.

What else is left, get out and live. Go sky diving, bungee jumping, what the sunrise from S. Africa on a beach, visit friends and family, go rent a Lamborghini for the weekend, do what you have always wanted to and let the coin dealers do their jobs and bring the coins to you and buy or approve when you have time.
