A number of people have offered to run it but I'm not sure if those offers were accepted.

It appears to have been suspended by the hosting company, rather than a lapsed domain registration. This is likely because the hosting fees were not paid. Usually, a hosting company will allow a grace period before deleting the files from the server.

I hope he did not get the date mixed up in his head (meaning 6/17)?

That's the domain registration expiration, not the hosting renewal date.
