GTG Oregon Commem

This coin was graded in a nightmare submission. The whole submission was something I hope to forget. I passed this one around at Central States and most people agreed I need to send this one back in. If I do send it in it will NOT be going back to NGC. Before I decide on what to do I would love to hear your opinions on the grade of this coin. Scour it for abrasions and you might find one of two.....even under a 13X Loupe. The luster is great and obviously it does have eye appeal. Thanks for your opinions! I really appreciate it.

I think there's something wrong with your camera... it obscured the grade? image

I love toning but I hate grading toners... MS65-67?

Is that a rim bump near "AMERICA" on the obverse?

Not to say you're wrong but it doesn't seem like the rim is a full circle,
there appears to be an indent in the area I described. Maybe just an artifact of the image.
On another not just because it has a slight rim bump doesn't mean it'll be bagged right?
Won't TPGs just knock a couple points off?

Oregon Trails are notorious for not having full circular rims, expecially in the pre 1938 issues. This is a die issue and not rim bumps or incomplete rims. In fact, it is a diagnostic for true Oregon Trails, expecially the scarcer dates such as the 1933D.

    The coin should grade MS65

Thanks! I just purchased a raw 1933D. Also, I would say this SHOULD grade a min of 66, but wouldn't be surprised if it came back a 66+. Would give it a 67 but that ***minor rim ding on the rev above the D in GOD may not be forgiving image to the graders.

It's not showing in this photo... it's just the way the toning and lighting are interacting with each other in your slab image.

Looks MS 66+ to me. There may be a small bump on the Obverse at America (3-4), not sure.

It pains me to say it but I'd say MS 63 with a shot at MS64. Loop to pictures, there seems to be some very miniscule, but "there" scratches on both sides. Die clashes....maybe but the "fine line" between the two........

Toning could be covering these scratches and I suspect you were not given the benefit of the doubt.

Great coin, seems like a great example, I would say I would not be happy with anything less than 66. Coin in hand from what I can see, I could think it could easily go 7 if the luster and surfaces look they way they do in the photo.

I think it should be MS 66 or 7 and with a Star from NGC but they had it in hand
and I do not and then again they do not thrill me with their grading of toned coins.

Don't see this being anything less than a gem. Great eye appeal too.

    MS66 or 67 imo.

You never know. The TPG could have thought some color was added or who knows what. And then net graded it down 1-2 pts to "protect" themselves.
While it's nothing less than MS65 imo, I've seen no better graded by NGC as MS67.

Nightmare submissions occur every so often. I've had one where 80% of the coins came back one pt lower than I expected and at the time it was devasting since
I was now down thousands of dollars on paper. I resubmitted the entire batch of unc bust/seated coins the next month and lo and behold, nearly everything comes back
1 pt higher. The gem 1882 half came back 2 pts higher as a MS67. Go figure. One could say they got that coin wrong twice as it was technically just a solid MS66 or 66+.

I've seen worse graded 67. I mean, if the pictures are accurate, I would think of it as a 67, but like I said, the minor rim ding on the reverse, a grader maybe saw it and docked it. I got my 1933-D the other day. To me, it's a lock 66, but if it came back a 67, then yours would have to be a 68.

I guess...I wonder what the problem is to you about the coin? What do you think it should grade? It's okay to have a difference of opinion. You got the coin in hand and I feel like this thread was started, not because you were just playing around, but because you really think the coin should have been graded something else. What is your opinion on the matter?

    Oregons are SPIFFY! image

I think the coin is a lock MS67 and I think most including Messydesk that saw it in hand believe so too. I think I will just let it be.

I really think that ding on the rim on the reverse is what held it back, but then again, I've seen worse MS67 oregons (edited to add: I said this above too. Hah!). So who knows? I would try again. Really!

I'm not real familar with commerative halfs but looking at the surfaces, luster and eye appeal I'm think 66+

there seems to be some very miniscule, but "there" scratches on both sides.

Those are what we call die polish lines, common for the coin and common for most commem's slick.

Complaining that a coin gets graded 66 plus instead of 67? Its a numbers game. Someone tell me what the difference is between a 66 plus and a 67? You could send that coin in 5 times and get 5 different grades. Nice coin though. image

The good side is that you have a better chance for a gold sticker. And these days a 66+ with a goldie may even be worth more than a 67, esp. an unstickered 67.

Don't see MS66+ as a "nightmare." Sounds like the graders on this day were just a tad conservative. On another day it could have easily gone 67.

Looks very nice to me. I'm not sure I could tell a 66 from a 67 in a lot of cases, especially in just a picture.
