Sterling Sports Auction #2

I just noticed the new Sterling auction went live with nearly 3 times the amount of items from last month. Thought maybe everyone would want to check it out.

Sterling Sports Auction

FINISHED 12/8/2008!!!

  • I won several lots in the first auction and had the cards in hand within 2 days. The option to pay by paypal with no add'l fee is certainly nice. I was impressed enough to consign several items to this current auction. He's got a few more lots that I'll be bidding on as well. Brian's auction is a nice alternative to both eBay and the other auctions houses.

Agreed. I've heard nothing but praise for Sterling's site and the Paypal option.

I won 4 small lots in his first auction. Based upon when I received my cards, I believe he sent them to me before my check even cleared! Looking forward to this 2nd auction.

The only thing I don't like about Sterling is the lack of item description. IMO, one of the key things that sets REA above everyone else is the fact that there are very detailed descriptions of any card from a relatively scarce set and they always opine on condition as well- ie pointing out where there are creases in PSA 4s that you might not be able to see from scans etc. With Sterling, they show a picture (small) of the card, and thats it.

Hi thanks for the link to the auction. There's some nice midgrade 1952 Topps high numbers i'd like to bid on, but I don't have any references to put down for past auctions. I've primarily done all my buying on ebay. How can I register to bid without having references? Will it matter if I leave that part blank?
  • I would like to have that answered to please.

Since he is also a member here, you may want to list your CU BOARD name as well.

    Hi Everyone,

Thank you for the nice words about the auction. It's great to hear that there are items of interest to many on the board, and I really appreciate the bids.

As was pointed out with respect to scans, if you click on any picture, it will enlarge. I think you'll find the scans are large enough to show the cards in great detail, but if you'd like a larger scan of anything, please let me know.

As far as descriptions, there are opinions on both sides of the issue. I feel that on the majority of cards, the scans provide enough information to sell the card. If there is an item that requires more information, then that's something that I will point out in the form of a description. Sometimes auction descriptions get carried away, so I've opted for scans only on the majority of cards.

Also, if you do not have a major auction house reference to provide, don't worry. You can put your eBay name or CU handle, and you will be approved. I want to see as many bidders get involved as possible, and I've been especially pleased with the number of users who are bidding in a non-eBay auction for the first time with Sterling.

If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to call or email.

    Thank you,

    Brian

Thanks Brian. And I agree with the OP that the inventory this month is strong. If you haven't been over yet, its def worth a look. If you're working on 52 Topps in 6-8 grade, you absolutely need to spend some time there.

You've got good taste Mike. image The 54 Bowman Mantle is one of the strongest cards in the auction. Definitely a keeper for whoever wins it.

Thanks to all the board members who have come by and registered in the past few days. I recognize many names and hope to see you all win something this auction.

Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

Initial bidding closes tonight at 10 PM EST. The auction will continue until no bids have been placed on any item for a period of 15 minutes. Many great deals still lurking throughout, so it might be worth a look. You can register all day online or by calling 845-849-1276.

Thank you to all who have bid and good luck tonight!

I got a good deal on a O-Pee-Chee Gretzky PSA 10. I missed out on the 1952 Topps. The Mantle went a tad bit too high for me, although from an investment standpoint, it was probably a good deal, as it was the lowest grade PSA gives with a qualifier, and the "mark" didn't look that bad. The Robinson went for full retail if you are basing it on a PSA 3 price. If it grades higher, then you would have done well with that one.

I won 11 of the 1952 topps PSA cards for my personal collection, nothing spectacular, it's tough to find good deals on 52s but I'd rather pay fees to an auction than to ebay. Missed out on 17 other 52s and the T222 Leach.
  • Went 2 for 4 but missed one I really needed. Picked up the 1937 exhibits and a T210-3 Smith. I am really liking the niche of these auctions by having a lot of lower priced items, its very nice finding items in the $20-100 range not on ebay and I dont have to have big money to win a lot like the bigger auctions. The paypal option was a super idea too. Already looking forward to the next auction.
  • Thats great on the 52's. I was needed some, but want to finish my PSA 6 56 set.

There seemed to be many deals to be had, and looks like many of the auctions finished decently below VCP.

    Any other winners?

Here is what I won (prices before buyers premium):

    Current Bid
    1909-11 T206 Piedmont Cy Young Bare Hand SGC 20 $25.00 $222.00 $222.00
1938 Dixie Lids Sammy Baugh Velvet Ice Cream SGC 60 $10.00 $92.00 $82.00
    Totals 2 $304.00

I am very excited about the Sammy Baugh. That is the card I wanted. Issued 10 years prior to his 1948 Bowman rookie. The Cy Young was the ultimate impulse purchase. My son's and I were watching the 2nd round of the NBA draft after coming home from baseball practice. I bid on this just because I was surfing the auction while watching the Baugh and between Spurs picks!

1909-11 Piedmon Cy Young SGC 20

Latest Auction Prices for: SGC 20 - Average Price: $325.00
    Listing Type: Show:
    Date Auction Link Price Extra
    11/30/10 eBay $325.00
    2/14/10 eBay $324.99

    1938 Dixie Lids Sammy Baugh
No SGC sales on record by VCP, so here is the PSA comparison. VCP only has sales data for PSA 2,4, & 5.

Latest Auction Prices for: PSA 5 - Average Price: $189.50
    Listing Type: Show:
    Date Auction Link Price Extra
    6/2/10 eBay $189.50
    12/3/08 eBay $239.00

I think I got good value on both purchases. Most of the other stuff I was looking at sold around VCP before the BP.

Something different that I have mixed feelings on is how they handle "extended bidding". Their rules allow you to bid on ANY auction in extended time provided you have bid on any lot in the auction. Most auctions that I have used before only allow you to bid on the auctions that you have placed a bid on during regular time. It can be good in that you don't have to place a bunch of marker bids but bad in that you have more competition for items you really want by impulse buys. For example in the Cy Young card I mentioned earlier, I did not bid until the extended time. In most auctions, I would not have been able to bid on this item.

Here is a card that I wanted but had NO idea what the market value was and did not want to overpay and it felt high already:

    1934 National Chicle Charles Lindbergh

Any non-sport collectors have an idea on what kind of price this got?

There is no VCP for the Lindbergh in that particular grade. A '4' sold for $50 in March of last year if that helps?
  • mcadamsmcadams Posts: 2,618 ✭✭✭
I was 0 for 6, but didn't bid very aggresively. I felt the 52 Topps got strong bids, but felt there was value in the good selection of midgrade T206. Several went off the board at affordable prices. Some non-HOF common T206 in PSA4 went for under $40 and they were nicely centered too.
