Are the 2*2 cardboard holders PVC ?

Hey, are the little cardboard holders that have the plastic window that you staple shut safe for long term con storage?
Thanks,
John

I have coins I bought in the 50's in 2x2's and they are just fine.

Those windows are usually made of mylar, which is safe. Remember that PVC is used to make plastic soft, which is why it is often found in flips that are very pliable, whereas the safe flips are quite brittle. Since the cardboard 2x2s have no reason to be soft, there's no reason to use PVC.

The 2X2 cardboard holders have mylar windows and are safe for coins. Most have cardboard dust on the windows from the manufacturing process so you need to clean the windows before using them by wiping them off with a clean cotton cloth or use compressed air to blow off the dust. Otherwise, your coins may develop spots. Also, be careful when removing coins from this type of holders---you don't want to ruin a coin with a staple scratch. I usually just punctire the window between the edge of the coin and the edge of the hole and then just bend the holder over a soft surface to tear the plastic window of the holder. If you store your 2X2 holders in a box for 2X2's, make sure you carefully flatten the staples with a pair of pliers so the staple of one holder doesn't tear the window of an adjacent holder and possibily damage the coin in that holder.

I use a flat clinch stapler on mine. Saves time and these are excellent staplers for all around use as well.

Yep... have some coins in 2x2's for well over ten years.... some I purchased that way and have no idea how long they have been stored that way. All are fine. Cheers, RickO
  • Should the 2x2's be then stored in a 2 x 2 box, or is it okay to slip the 2 x 2's into the plastic album sheet holders?

Either works fine but I would avoid using the sheets that are made of PVC and stick with the polyethelene sheets. PVC sheets will give off gases that may be detrimental to your coins even if they are in 2X2's.

Ok, so, we are using the safe cardboard flips. Now how do we know if our album pages contain PVC or not? Argh.

MOST 2x2s are safe, and do not contain PVC. However, some older ones did have it.

I have purchased collections with coins in older 2x2s where the inner plastic was definitely soft and contained a PVC-like plasticizer. The coins had sticky/oily green slime on them that fortunately came off after an acetone soak.

Any 2x2s sold today are probably fine.

Smell the album pages---PVC smells like a new shower curtain.

I've had an esteemed (IMHO anyway) advise me against storing my proofs in the cardboard 2x2's; would the dust have been the primary reason?
