Okay-

what are the chance of finding these in bank rolls?

Has anyone found them other than in a mint set?

I am curious- more later after a few replies

After looking through maybe several boxes of halves, I'd imagine that you'll find these sooner or later. I've found all 3 years both P and D via roll searching so it can be done.

Folks would buy them by the $100 bag, search em for cherries then try to sell the rest.

Unfortunately, there's not a big market for them so, they'd end up being spent.

Finding them in bank rolls is to be expected. I know I've spent my fair share.

It's weird. I've gone through several boxes of halves, and the most recent date has been 1993. It's like they stopped making them at that point. Also, I seem to get a BUNCH of 1971 lol

the half dollars from 2002-present appear occaisionally in bank rolls.

I think the most recent I've found is a 2009 a few months ago.

making an even rarer appearance are the proof half dollars. I've even pulled a few 1987's out of bank rolls. Still dreaming about finding a 1970d in a bank roll. Also, I have never pulled a silver proof from circulation.

around my parts, we get a lot of 1995, 1996 and 1998.

I have found the '03's and 06's in bank rolls... do not recall any '08's though. Cheers, RickO

I've found all of these dates from searching bank rolls. I put together a nice Dansco Album set in AU-Unc. from roll searching. The only dates I had to purchase from the local B&M were 1970-D and 2008-2010, haven't gotten the 2011s yet.
  • coinkat----Years ago where I live in rural Maryland, I thought it would be interesting to do a Kennedy set in Au--Unc. It was something to do without spending any money---a little pure fun if you will.

Been sending my wife to the local banks for halves---- started doing this about when the state quarters came out until now. In all this time, the latest date has been a 1998 Philly. My local banks do not attempt to keep any halves on hand. In fact, when they get any at all, they are glad to see my wife to take them off their hands. It has appeared to me that the system doesn't have any desire to see these coins out in circulation. That's a shame IMHO. Bob [supertooth]

In NC area I've gotten lots of bank rolls of 1995-2000 uncirculated new halves. Heck I even got a $500 fed box with 50 rolls of new 1996s.

The 2001-2010s depend on kids breaking apart mint sets and people searching mint bags.
  • I've sent coins out for grading over the years and spent some of the ones that didn't meet my minimum grade (even clad proof coins, but not silver proof).

Thought it might be fun to "seed" circulation with them and see if anyone finds them.

I just saw a bunch of halves being used at a casino at the Pai Gow table (Reno, NV). One guy told me he found a 40% silver one while he was playing.
I'd keep playing. I don't think the heavy stuff will be coming down for quite a while!

    Thanls for the replies-

I thought it would be fun to just try something I haven't done in a while- I found a cheap Kennedy album starting in 1988- it has the proof issues- I hand the either and it is the blue Whitman starting in 1964- no dates are in it. I thought it would be interesting to see what could be pulled from rolls- did not fair well with the silver- 1 1964 and a 67- but thought it was interesting to find dates that were for only mint sets

I've also found solid date fed-wrapped rolls before. I once got a $500 box of all 2000-P. It was very boring looking through all those but I had to at least check for errors. Unfortunately, there were no keepers.image
