Home Trading Cards & Memorabilia Forum

What have you learned from this forum?

I joined in 2003, so I have been here a while. I have learned a few things since being here.

I have learned NOT TO TYPE IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS BECAUSE IT MEANS YOU ARE YELLING. I was rebuked after my very first post.

I have learned that people that you have never laid eyes on can be very generous, helpful, and friendly.

I have learned that some people love to argue over anything.

I have learned that it is possible to trust people you have never met, unless their name is Gary and they collect vintage wax pack wrappers.

I have learned that it is nice when other people take interest in a topic that you start.

I have learned that "Storm" knows everything there is to know about Ebay and Paypal.

I have learned that just because you think someone is dead, doesn't mean that they are dead.

I have learned that people actually collect Chris Sabo and Brett Butler.

I'm sure I could think of more. What do you have to add?

Shane

  • After breaking my leg riding a bicycle last week, I should leave all riding to Stown.
I have learned that if you are laid up this is a great way to occupy your time.
That after a 20 year hiatus from cards, I do still thoroughly enjoy collecting.
There are more baseball items out there for me to collect than I could have ever imagined.
    I love Topps Heritage baseball.
Just like in real life, my collecting focus is all over the place.
    I love making custom cards.
Vintage baseball game questions should be directed to Stone.
    Paypal/Ebay questions directed to Storm.
There are many generous folks here.
There are a ton of knowledgeable people here that are more than willing to help you out.

I'm sure that I could think of many more things as well.

And that most of the experts in the hobby aren't publishing books or magazines about it.

    Afternoon,

    What I have learned here:

    1. This place is mostly about Baseball, whether its the Cards or the discussion, 80%+ is Baseball, I can live with it, I don't understnd the popularity, never have, never will, (Boring!!), but I can live with it. Football, Hockey are second tier and then there is the bottom tier, Non Sports, Wrastlin', & Racecar stuff!!! I can live with that as well, for purely pragmatic motives, the more of you who concentrate on your Baseball Crap...er..I mean cards, the less competition I have in my Business!

    2. Buy Unopened Wax from anywhere but from Steve and you will be Tarred and Feathered and ran out on a rail. The reality is more complicated, most of the stuff sold on E-bay is crap, (At best somebody opens packs in a 81 Topps Football box until they Hit the Montana, then sells the rest of the packs in the Box, or are outright Re-Seals. But if you do your due diligence and take a few in the shorts you can find some trustworthy vendors and get good stuff.

    3. For all the Drama occasionally around here about the Trustworthyness/Untrustworthyness of members here, in the past 2 years I have done no fewer than 15 Multi Thousand dollar deals with nary a hitch, Not Once!!!

    4. The discovery of these Boards and the participation in the same, is what propelled my fledgling little 10-15 auctions a week into a Store with Inventory and decent Yearly Sales numbers which if I can continue to grow at its current rate, when I Retire in 8 years will be a Full time endeavor making as much as I do now! At least that's the Goal, and everybody should have Goals!

    5. This place led me to CBT which is sometimes Fun, sometimes Really Fun, and always entertaining!

    6. Other than a few Aholees, the Collectors here are helpfull, inspired, inspiring, and friendly. It does take a little bit, but if you stick around and don't get too off the wall too often, you'll eventually find a place here!

    7. It is May 19th.....It is Snowing here again, has been since last Night, 3 inches today, 3-6 tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!imageimageimage

Actually Collect Non Sport, but am just so full of myself I post all over the place !!!!!!!
  • A recent survey determined that the sport of choice for people was as follows:
    Urban poor: basketball
    Maintenance employees: bowling
    Front line workers: football
    Supervisors: baseball
    Middle managers: tennis
    executives?officers: golf

The conclusion: The higher you go the smaller your balls become.

Learned a lot and saved many thousands of dollars especially, as was already noted, on avoiding scammers when it comes to unopened packs.

Crystal realization: the more I learn - the more I realize I know nothing.

There's a very thin line between collecting and being totally out of my mind.

Due to the tenacity of some on this board....if you lie....they will FIND YOU OUT.

EVERYONE has something to contribute - ya just have to look.

There's really good people here - the other "few" can easily be ignored.

edit: and very important: we shouldn't hold onto our collections too tightly - or they'll wind up holding onto you.

Just remember Rich G - he had - IMO - excessive pride in his collection - I hope he's in a better place now?

The board has all sorts of personalities and people with good (and not so good) advice. eBay is full of opened unopened, BBCE is the place to buy, 75 Topps is a very popular set, and group subs, particularly those gone bad, can get crazy. Most of all, I enjoy checking these boards to see what's new, what's happening and to attain more info or more cards for my collection.

    I've learned....

-There's a thin line between "collecting" and insanity. Staying up to 2 or 3 am for an auction, to bid on a piece of cardboard? And you may have to pay for it over 2 or 3 months? Or longer. Or arrange financing. That borders on insanity.

-I like the in depth detective threads (i.e. frank thomas nnof). Those are interesting.

-I like the variety of cards people post.

-These boards seem to have a midwestern tone, or vibe. I would guess the average collector here is 38-42 years old, and from St Louis, Chicago, Ohio, etc. It doesnt strike me as a primarily new york or california board. Maybe a midwestern honesty? Midwestern values. I don't know.

Baseball is about 75%. Football 15, basketball, hockey, the rest.

-The personal stories are interesting. Like the George W Bush, book signing. Or running into a celebrity.

I think he is referring to one of the auctions houses (think Mile High, REA, etc). They don't allow sniping software. I woke up at 6 AM east coast time, to find out my last remaining lot got outbid on thru Mile High. I would have thrown one more bid out there if I was awake....oh well.

    1) I have learned a lot about PSA standards, or in some cases, the lack thereof.

    2) I have learned that most of the same people who demand Paypal gift for payment have, in any other circumstance, morals to spare.

    3) I have learned that no matter how sane and rational people approach the topic of "condition rarities" or "low pop commons" in theory, in practice most of us are contradicting ourselves in our buying habits through the subversive allure of the Registry.

    but most of all:
    4) I have learned that post counts are not a measure of a board member.

There are many many fine folks on this forum no matter what they collect and that there are a few Prima Donnas who know it all and love to critisize forum members because of their lack of phonetic skills and spelling skills which all almost made me leave this forum a while back until a few of the class guys on this forum told me to hang in.I am not as educated as most of you forum members are but I never seen where a High Level of education was needed to be on this forum. As long that there are no requirements I will stick around and continue to piss off those few who like to knock my spelling and phonetics.
Oh by the way I will be retiring from my job June 3rd as a Store Manager for a National Supermarket Chain with 45 years.I will then be spending more time on this forum and share much more of my collecting career with you all as I will have more time. The hobby is VERY different from when I left it in the '80s.

I'm still trying to balance being a hobbyist vs. collector vs. investor.
