eBay gamble, 1928 Peace UPDATE::: Coin in hand UPDATE::: Grading results

How do you think I'll do?

Update:
Arrived today. Took a long time to get here in the mail.

Update 8/22: coin graded PCGS MS63 the second time through (.92 the first time).

Genuine 1928-P. Thickly toned, but a nice BU. MS63 IMO. There is no rim damage or beveling, as some were concerned. There are a few light, whispy marks underneath the toning that don't show in the pictures.

On the plus side, it doesn't look like the previous owner tried to clean it up with a toothbrush or worse.

My gut says you probably did okay. Seems like there's a lot of upside as it could be quite nice in hand.

It's got everything ... good feedback, bad picture. Looks original. No returns accepted bothers me, but what the heck? Hope you got a good one!

Your gut is pretty good and I don't think it will be any different this time, To be honest the luster/strike looks like a 28 and the toning precludes any old cleanings. The only question in my mind is AU58 or MS but either way you'll make money. The only thing that will screw you is an AU58 1928-s but hey that's what paypal is for

image So if you receive a 28-s is this going to turn into a SNAD Paypal dispute thread because you didn't win your "gamble" since there are no returns on the coin???? Maybe this novice seller is not so novice after all???

It's described only as a 1928 silver dollar, which also would include a 1928-S.

Something definitely wrong with the edge/rim.

Is it just me or is the light reflection on the reverse look....off...like there is something plastic like residing on the surface and it is reflecting the flash? The luster seems to be running 2 to 8 but those two white reflections at 5 and 11 don't look like they are on the surface, at least in the close up. Just my thoughts.

I hope everything is good with it though.

I am pretty sure I see a S too on the reverse so upside is if you got a problem free, 1928-S in MS-63 you did okay, if a 23-S pray for a MS-64, but after fee's your still down. I am all for gambles, but if you wanted to get kicked in the stones I only charge $35.83 + tax, could have saved you a bunch!

Edit: Just looked at the rims, your screwed any way you cut the pieimage

I must say I have taken gambles on crappy pictures, I bought a 72 DDO for $200 BIN that graded MS-67RD, but the pictures showed a blurry MS RD coin so I figured the downside was little plus there was a return policy so.............. IS it too late not to pay, take the negatives and learn a lesson or not?

That bump is too far off the rim to be a mintmark.

I'd never buy a raw key date coin off of eBay---way too risky. Be sure to check for a removed S mintmark when you get it.

The coin was previously listed by the seller at $325 with pictures that were blurrier and this description:

"1928 peace dollar-low mintage-rare not an expert but would say almost uncirculated, saw simular coin advertised for $500-$600 a great buy or extremly higher"
    Previous listing

Not to be cynical, but perhaps it's like fishing....that bait got no takers, so he put a fresher worm on the hook in his new listing?

Or he tried to take better pictures and lower his price? As would be typical if you're trying to sell something?

My take on all of this is a lot of members here over estimate their instincts/gut and underestimate Will's (GEN). Only downside I see is like I said before that the what appears to be honest seller missed the s mint mark and the coin is a slider.

I think the coin is a genuine 1928 but the dark colors on the obverse would have scared me off. Even if this particular coin doesn't turn out to be a homerun, good for you for having the faith in your own knowledge to go for it. No guts, no glory, I really hope this works out for you.

You will recieve a harshly cleaned 1928 Peace dollar with a note that says "Hi, I took a brillo pad to the coin to remove some black tarnish. The coin is much more shiny now, and probably worth more than what you paid. Thanks again"

Hey now, I have a 1928 Peace Dollar that my father gave to me, and that his father gave to him back in the 1950s. It's a polished XF details turd, but that doesn't make the story any less true. image

Well, I am one hunred percent certain it is a 1928. Can't tell if it is a San Fran mint or Phili from the images, though. Good luck. I, too, have had nice luck with eBay gambles. Some you win, some you lose.

Looks like it had black tarnish and then was dipped. Some of the areas now show etching into the coin where some of the tarnish had been.

To be fair the "but hey that's what paypal is for " are my words. I have a decent enough sellers rep on ebay and the BST but if I buy a 1928 dollar that is even slightly eluded to as being a P mint and it comes back as a S with the P price point I would be quick to initiate a return and I could care less what anybody thinks. The no returns is not the real policy just a wishful sellers uninformed proclamation with no bearing on reality. I make decisions based on facts & reality, not faux forum integrity rants.
