Market Coins @ Pikes Market in Seattle

I will be in Seattle next weekend and noticed there is a coin shop inside the market. Has anyone been there or have any feedback on it? Just curious.

Its a very small shop that deals in both coins and ball cards. Very limited selection with substantial mark up. I'd still take a look if your at Pikes.

very retail type of shop....but if you get to know him (Darryl I think?) then I think that it would be a great shop...

It's been closed every time I've been around there, though as a general rule, I avoid Pike Place (and all of downtown) like the plague. I hate driving around there. That said, it's a great place to walk around. Don't forget to check out the original Starbucks. If you head a bit south towards Pioneer Square, there's a national park/museum on the Yukon gold rush which is rather well done.

.....mostly boring circulated pocket change in that shop (and as was noted, baseball cards)......you'd have a lot more fun at the coin shop in the WA convention center.

If you have an hour to kill, go to the Convention Center and ask him why more of his coins aren't certified. Be sure to bring ear plugs. image

Small Coin Shop that has been at the Market for years with an inventory of mostly circulated coins, notes and memorabilia. It is a great place to browse and also you should check out the Comic Book Store just a few shops down the hall.

Have a great time in Seattle.

  • I concur with the responses. You better watch out when asking the convention dealer about certified coins. He has been in the business much longer that those PCGS graders, and according to him don't even know what to look for when grading coins. He did have some nice coins for sale (at coin store prices). After listening to his long story about how much he knows about grading, I calmly asked how much for that PCGS Oregon Trail Commerative Half. He became less irritated when I said thanks, I'll take it.
The Pike Place coin store is a trip, but I never found anything close to being a good deal.
If you have time (and money) check out the Flying Fish Restraunt, it is out of this world.

I agree, the Pike Place Market coin shop is pretty much a waste of time. The Convention Center coin shop is somewhat better and I picked up a couple of good deals there. He is not nearly as knowledgeable as he professes to be. It would seem he learned a fair amount and then retreated into an intellectual vacuum, confined by his own skull. There are good deals to be had because of this. And yes, the Flying Fish restaurant is excellent. Seattle also has some of the best Thai restaurants in America. Cheers, RickO

I used to live at 1st and Seneca a scant three blocks from the market. Skip the shop and buy the Alaskan king crab legs instead. Unlike Jeremy I love DT Seattle and miss it daily. Except for the professional homeless panhanndlers on every corner. Also, EVERY VW bus that is still running has somehow ended up in Seattle or Portland. Bizzare. MJ

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......

LOL!!! Last time I was in that shop was about ten years ago, maybe twelve? I was just getting into collecting slabbed coins and decided to stop in during lunch time when I was working on a remodeling project at the convention center. I too asked him about slabbed coins and got an earful. Glad to see he hasn't changed. He did have some very nice gold and silver, as well as quite a selection of just about all types and denominations of pre-1900 coinage. Seemed like a decent place to drop some big bucks on a square deal if you know what you are looking for.

Living in the south end, I like to frequent the coin shops at the B & I and Freighthouse Square in Tacoma. Smaller selection of older coinage at each, but both seem to have very fair prices on most items.

If precious metals are your thing, make sure to visit Northwest Territorial Mint in Federal Way. They ALWAYS buy, even when the market is spiked up, and they ALWAYS sell, even when the market has dropped down sharply. And their margins are tigher than anyone in the industry. Go to nwtmint.com

They also have the best mac & cheese I've ever had - though do yourself a favor and get a potato, onion, and cheese piroshky at Piroshky Piroshky (don't be afraid of the line); also the hazelnut cream is good, as is the rhubarb, and the spinach egg and cheese! Mmm. I go to Seattle sometimes just for lunch!
