Do you ever feel like your nose is stuck....

AUandAGAUandAG Posts: 25,033 ✭✭✭✭✭
to the tail of the cow in front of you? You know, you are just a minion following others, just like
yourself, in the endless search for the same coins?

With Morgans, and also with the Carson City dollars, I have felt exactly that. I'm in a crowd of
collectors just like myself. No diversity, no uniqueness, no individuality, just sameness.

Oh, if I just went for white coins I'm still in a crowd. If I went for only toned coins, I'm still in the
crowd. If I went for only f-15 coins, I'm still in the herd.

Tired of smelling the same old heifer in front of me.....

Got to try something else. Need a rest from the crowd. Gotta shake the mud off my hooves and lift
my nose into the air and try another direction. 50 years of the same smelly behinds is enough.

Perhaps I'll cross to Gold, or Canadian or Austrian. Maybe I should look at paper money?

Wow, do you ever feel like a hamster in a cage on a spinning wheel?

Gotta get off!!

Sold my home, will buy a new one and then start a new direction in numismatics. Maybe 3 cent pieces?

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, did you ever feel this way and what did you do?

Darkside, ancients or darkside paper. US coins are a VERY small part of what is available to collect.

Nope, if I like it, I collect it, tokens, foreign, whatever. There is simply too many great looking pieces out there for me to bother with the likes of die variations.

There are a total of only 4 serious ACTIVE Mercury Dime Complete Variety collectors: Larry, Tony, Jon and myself. Do you want to join the fun to make it 5 people in the entire world? image

No, I chart my own course with my collection. I don't care for Morgans, or most of the other things that most collectors go after.

Well - I love coins, CC Morgans so I'm a fellow herd member. BUT wait.. I also LOVE old casino Chips and have a great collection of those, oh and there is Wheaties Boxes - that can be as daunting as coins with the varieties, oh and there is also Mego Action Figures - gotta do those, I have a Lizzard Gorilla and a Brown Galen but the Urko / Ursus mystery remains - some of you MAY get that reference. Let's NOT forget Comic Books - stick with the Silver Age there Spidey #129 is my crown Jewel - My favorite is my vodka collection, but unfortunately I keep losing the contents of the bottles! So herd away my friend!

    Nice collage, Stef. Very pretty.

Feuctwagers? No, not for me. Nothing against them, and Ray is a cool guy. But there's nothing about them I find interesting or attractive.

Notes don't do it either. Maybe go for the gold? Early gold. Yum.

A person should go after what pleases them.
My tastes and collection jumps around enough that I never get in a rut. My last coin purchases since early April were: DMPL MS65 Morgan, MS65 Walker, $1 AU55 gold, 1891CC MS64 Morgan "Spitting Eagle" , 1769 XF Pillar 8 reales. Today, since I couldn't find a $20 Liberty that suited me at the coin store, I picked up nine state capital medals that I thought were attractive and fit in with that small collection of mine.
No interest in foreign stuff, there's enough U. S. coins, medals and currency to keep me interested.

I felt that way when collecting Morgan and Peace VAM's like I was treading on a path that was entirely beaten down.
Decided to put together a set of Eisenhower's as a distraction. Short series, Easily acquired, inexpensive.
Then during the usual research done on anything new, I learned that they are not so easy as I thought
to find in higher grades. Then I stumbled across the Ike Group and started learning about the varieties
in the series. And recent discoveries and the variety hunter in me took over, It has been one of the
most "pure fun" rides I have been on in all my years of coin collecting.
Plus with the new 499 page Eisenhower Dollar Variety book by our own forum member Rob Ezerman
and others of the Ike Group. It is really getting exciting now.
I think that I now have some idea what an exciting time it was at the very beginning of
    the VAM variety discoveries.

The Eisenhower always held a special place with me also, When I was a kid in the 70's
that coin was just so huge in those hands, and it seemed like a whole lot of candy
could be bought with one of those image

Buy world coins by the pound. Fairly cheap (under $20) and you get at least 100 coins each time. You never know what you will get. Even better, try building date sates for various countries doing that. It can be done. I've only done a handfull of by the pound purchases, and I'm more than halfway done with some sets.

To me that's more fun than buying single coins. Cheaper, too. That's a good thing as I have an extremely limited budget.

    Never follow crowds.

Bad things happen in crowds. But even worse things happen to those who let others think for them.

The world is smoke and mirrors and you need to get outside to see it.

That is why I collect paper, Canadian, Mexican, US and Die Varieties, kinda like 31 flavors, problem is I only have enough for one or two cones at a time so I don't get too fat, but don't exactly starve either.

    Just my 12 1/2 Exchequer-
