<< <i>What is that big Yount rookie on the top of the shelf on the left? >>

I guess the picture distorted the Yount rookie card. It is a normal sized one, I will probably include it in the next group sub. I'm hoping for a 9, but I think it's an 8 or 8.5.

I should have remembered "Gumby" was Gantner's nickname. I didn't remember how he got his nickname so I looked it up. Did he really run like Gumby? That would have been cool to see. image I remember seeing him play, but I don't remember anything odd about his running style.

Nice picture Doug. I had one that was a little more graphic but I'll save it for a rainy day...LOL.

2011 has been surprisingly light in the kicks received to the groin department for me. So put me down for 20-30 if this thing takes off.

    STAY HEALTHY!

    Doug

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

  • So this is going to happen. If we can come up with at least 1000 cards, the price will be $4.50 per.

If we can only secure 750 cards, the price will be $4.75.

The only requirements other than the usual is that the cards must be no older than 1970 and worth at most $100.

So far, we have over 500, from the following people. Obviously these numbers are approximate and may change depending on what people decide.

    CrazyMind2017: 230
    Sethro: 50
    miconelegacy: 200
    thedutymon: 10
cpamike: TBD, may depend on when the entire submission is sent/brought to PSA
    richtree: 20, depending on price
    jrboles: 20
    nendee: 40 (sent via PM)
    tigerdean: 5 (sent via PM)

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to send a PM.
  • Monday morning bump.

So the tentative plan is for everyone who wants to participate to get me their cards no later than Saturday, August 13. I will then submit them in person at the White Plains show the following weekend. This will save the cost of shipping to Newport Beach.

If we get solid, confirmed commitments from enough people participating and we can put together a submission of at least 1000 cards within the next few weeks, I can make the submission sooner. We'd have to pay to ship the cards to California, but we'd obviously get them back much earlier.

As for costs/payment, I'll add up the total cost of the entire submission, including shipping to Newport Beach (if applicable) and back to me, and divide by the total number of cards to get an exact grading rate per card with shipping included. Multiply that amount by the number of cards you've submitted, and that's how much you'll owe, NOT INCLUDING return shipping from me back to you. I figure we can calculate those final shipping numbers later on, especially since there will probably be at least 8 USPS rate hikes between now and the time I actually send your graded cards back to you.

If you're sure you want to participate in this, please send me a PM to confirm. Again, if we get at least 1000 cards, the price will be $4.50 per card plus all involved shipping costs.

Is this group sub a dead issue?

Looks like the August special didn't dip below $5.
  • I'd also be interested...probably be in for 50 or so this go around. May have more but gotta watch the $$
  • Not dead at all....... I've been kind of burned out on cards for the past month or two, so I haven't been posting as much and I've only been reading the forum 2-3 days per week, but I'm totally in on this.

Mike Kelley mentioned in another thread today that he has close to 300 cards. I have approximately 200, give or take, so that means we're only about 500 cards away from getting the 1000 we need to get the quoted $4.50 price, not including the cards from people listed above in my post on May 13.

For everyone who wants to participate, you can send your cards to me, and I'd have to receive them no later than Thursday, August 18, or you can bring them to the card show in White Plains and meet me at the PSA table, where we'd drop off the entire submission together.

PLEASE NOTE, IF WE DON'T GET A TOTAL COMMITMENT OF AT LEAST 1000 CARDS BY WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 10, WE'LL HAVE TO SCRAP THE WHOLE PROJECT, SO PLEASE DO NOT SEND ME CARDS OR MONEY UNTIL YOU RECEIVE CONFIRMATION THAT THE ENTIRE SUBMISSION HAS THE GREEN LIGHT.

What I'll need even before you send me the cards themselves is a complete listing of all the details of each card, preferably in spreadsheet format, so I can get all the paperwork properly organized. This is the basic information required on the PSA submission form - sport, year of issue, manufacturer, card number, player(s), etc. I am meticulous when it comes to this kind of stuff, but I can't do it with incorrect or incomplete information, so it's imperative that you send me the full list no later than Sunday, August 14. This will give me sufficient time to compile a complete combined list and fill out the submission form properly. Please make sure that the cards are in the same order as they're listed on the spreadsheet. I have the older version of Excel, so I can open .xls files, but not .xlsx files, and I'd prefer to avoid downloading the plugin for it. I also have Microsoft Works 7.0. Worst case scenario, you can send me all the information in a CSV or even a simple text file, and I'll manage somehow.

Again, cards must have a declared value of no greater than $100 each, and we're limited to basically 1970s and later standard issue (no thick/oversized/memorabilia cards, no autographed cards except from 1998-present that are authenticated by the manufacturer). At least that's what Roy agreed to when I spoke to him back in May. Given that the current special is for cards from 1964 and later, I'm guessing we could probably sneak in a few from 1964-1969 and not have to worry about it.

As for return shipping, assuming a total declared value of $5,001 - $15,000, it will cost $35.95 + $0.25 per card after the first 25. Effectively, this bumps the grading rate from $4.50 to $4.75 per card, and the total cost for having the cards shipped back to me from PSA will be nearly $300 for 1000 cards. If we hit 1100 cards in total, it will cost over $300.

Given the maximum Fedex liability of only $1000 per package for sports cards and memorabilia, I don't think it's really a viable option to use, but I'd be remiss if I didn't at least mention it, as I would expect the cost for Fedex shipment would be around $40-50, rather than nearly $300 for insured USPS through PSA. I'd be willing to risk it with my own cards, since most of them aren't even worth the grading fee, but I totally understand other people probably won't want to risk it with theirs. If I'm wrong about this, and everyone is willing to gamble on a Fedex Ground shipment getting lost or damaged, then Fedex is clearly the cheaper way to go by a significant amount. Personally, I've found their service to be more than reliable, but there are undoubtedly horror stories to be found if you look for them.

As for grading fees, you can send me cash, check, money order, or PayPal Gift. You can also send regular PayPal, but you'll have to pay the 2.9% fee. If sending regular PayPal, please let me know ahead of time so I can double check the numbers, as the fee has to be compounded (fee on the fee).

Any questions, please post here or send a PM.

Back in the day when this thread first appeared, I said I was up for throwing in about 50 cards. At the time there was no stipulation based on year, etc.

It seems now like this has changed.

I have some non-sport cards from 1956,(the same kind that I sent in the last group sub) that I would like to submit. However, now it seems I cannot submit these cards.

Am I reading this correctly that this group sub must follow the same rules as the current collector's special? (Post 1964, under $100)

    Thanks!

  • I have no problem with that, but my instinct tells me PSA probably will. The whole point of a bulk discount is for them to only have to handle a single submission form. It reduces the logistical and clerical work for them and allows them to focus their energy on grading and slabbing cards. Using multiple submission forms and multiple return shipping addresses kind of defeats the purpose for them, but I suppose you can call Roy and ask him to find out for sure one way or the other.

In the interim, it would be presumptive of me to count your 300 cards as part of the 1000 we'd need to get this group sub off the ground, so we're quite a ways away, but we still have a week to get this off the ground.

Initially I hadn't posted about any restrictions on older cards, but that was very early on in the thread. After I actually spoke to Roy at the last White Plains show, I posted an update summarizing what was discussed and agreed upon.

  • << <i>Totally understand, and yes that makes sense. It was just worth mentioning in case it was an option.

Anyone interested in taking part in this sub should be very thankful that someone like Scott is willing to do the legwork to make it happen because it is a lot of work that takes time and attention to get done right.

It's important not to rush things like this, though, so if PSA won't do separate forms then it looks like it might be worth waiting till Sept for you to get the necessary volume. >>

I wouldn't consider the timeline I've outlined above rushing it. If there are enough cards by August 10, there will be plenty of time for me to get all the legwork done. Submitting the cards at the show on the 18th is a target date, but if there are any delays, we'll have the entire weekend to handle it, as I can always drop off the submission as late as Sunday, August 21 if need be.

    Count me in for 45.

How close are we to 1,000 cards?

    Thanks for your attention.

    Tom
  • ...so the 10th has past. Any chance at getting this done?
  • Sorry guys, not enough interest.
