I wonder if anyone has thought about investigating how Pakistan's security apparatus could be oblivious to this luxurious hideaway.

    From CNN:

<< <i>In the dark of night, U.S. helicopters approached a high-walled compound in Pakistan on a mission to capture or kill one of the world's most notorious terrorist leaders.

Less than 40 minutes later -- early Monday morning in Pakistan -- Osama bin Laden was dead, along with four others inside the complex, and the U.S. forces departed with the slain al Qaeda leader's body to fulfill a vow that originated shortly after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States. >>

I am very humbled by and grateful to all military personnel for the sacrifices and service to our country - thank you and God Bless each one of you.

They weren't oblivious. I want to know why it took our intelligence so long to figure out who was in there. It should have been obvious that it was someone important.

Maybe we should take out everyone that has an impressive looking house in the Middle East? I look forward to working with you guys in Afghanistan later this year... you point, I'll shoot! image

Edited to add: It's common to see that type of home throughout the Middle East.

Now reporting he was buried at sea.....starting to look fishy.

The US government will need to show video of the body for it to be believed in the Muslim world - similarly to what happened when Hussein was both captured and after his hanging.

Otherwise - no proof of death - just an obama speech.

I do worry that he will be viewed as a martyr, whereas if he had been taken alive, Al Quaeda would have had added embarrasment. Still, that would have meant keeping him alive. A quick bullet to the head really has been long overdue. With the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks coming up later this year, we'll have a bit more closure.

And, while we are at it, we're seeing other dictators in the Middle East get overthrown largely by their own people. Iran's regime should sell while it can and quit while it's ahead.

While I certainly want to congratulate and thank our armed forces, I can't believe that people aren't congratulating the intelligence services of this country. They are the people that MADE IT HAPPEN. Without them the Seals would still be doing gruntwork somewhere else. So, I'd like to give a BIG, BIG HIP HIP HOORAYYYYY!!! image to the men and women of our intelligence services!!!

A couple of thoughts, first off, let's not forget that the reason Iran is ruled by a dictatorship in the first place is that the US overthrew a democratically elected government and then propped up a dictator. The dictator was inevitably overthrown and another semi-extremist viewpoint took over. For all that, Iran is still more democratic most countries in the region (granted that's not saying a lot). You might try reading some source material from the Middle East to get the local viewpoint. Given the Web, this is easy to do. I would recommend Al Jazeera english language. Just as any other media outlet, be it CNN, Fox or the New York Times, Al Jazeera has it's own slant on the news, and you learn to take it with the appropriate grain of salt. Having said that, they actually are RELATIVELY balanced given the historical US support for Israel and dictators throughout the region. Anyhow here's a column written by Marwan Bishara about the death of bin Laden that might give you something to think about.

"But for the Muslim world, bin Laden has already been made irrelevant by the Arab Spring that underlined the meaning of peoples power through peaceful means.

It is also worth recalling that bin Laden's al-Qaeda and its affiliates have killed far more Arabs and Muslims than they did Westerners.

And it was only after they failed to garner real support in the Arab world that they ran back to Afghanistan and began to target the West."

Spot on! Given enough time those dictators in Iran will be a thing of the past. This should be evident based on some of the internal uprisings the last very years especially after that "election" they had.

Spoken by a true outsider... and it's an acronym - SEALs. There are no grunts in SOCOM, JSOC or CFSOC!

I realize that Seals is SEALS just like ms65 should be MS65. As to gruntwork, I'm talking about them carrying their load not them being basic infantry (who BTW should be equally applauded).
