Do you still own your first PCGS coin?

blu62vetteblu62vette Posts: 11,945 ✭✭✭✭✭
Corresponding with another forum member it was interesting to hear that he still had his first PCGS coin, a Morgan in a rattler, because I have the same. I think I bought this at my B&M about 18 years ago, not really sure on the timeframe. At the time the dealer was doing a lot of green PCI coins and some PCGS. I have always liked this coin guess that is why I still have it and it has survived the non-PL purges of my collection. If you still have your first PCGS coin, lets see it!! Or if you know what it was and it is gone maybe let us know when you got it and what you had.

Here is mine:

I own one of the first four PCGS graded coins that I had. Back in the late 1980s I had a dealer send in four gold coins from my eight piece type set for PCGS grading. In those days only PCGS authorized dealers could submit coins for grading.

When I got the pieces back, the grading was ultra conservative. I traded one piece in the PCGS holder for another coin. I eventually cracked out the other three, which all got up-grades and sold two of those coins. I still have one of the coins left.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Don't know if I do for sure or not.
I probably do as I haven't sold many coins (aside from newly issues USMint "flippables").
I actually have no way to really remember, unless it shows on my spreadsheet with the earliest date (I did lose my first group of records and had to recreate with receipts what I could).

To me, a coin is a coin, regardless of the holder. Heck, I may have even gotten an ICG before a PCGS back then.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I don't but remember it was a blast white Morgan in a PCGS rattler holder graded MS-63.

Yep, still own my plain 1923 MS 62 Peace Dollar in a rattler holder. Not very attractive, with water spots. As a kid in the 1980s, I was really excited to own a certified coin!

Nope. It wasn't special anyway. A 1997-S PCGS PR-68DCAM cent. Kind of embarrassing, now that I think about it.

No, it was a MS64 1953 Franklin that I held about a year before upgrading.

Yes 1883 cc morgan rattler. Bought in 1987 or 1988. Definetly would upgrade. Just a white coin no toning.

Don't post very often, just read the posts, but I still have every coin that has ever been in my collection. My first PCGS coins were 4 on a collector's club submission, 1877 Trade Dollar - XF45, 1885-O Morgan MS62 and 2 cleaned no grade.
I never met a coin that wouldn't fit in my collection.....

Yes, I still have my first PCGS slabbed coin. Of course, it is no longer entombed in plastic, but I still have it. It is an 1829 LM-1/V7, in PCGS AU-55 grade, purchased from J. J. Teaparty on August 13, 1994. Of course, in 1994 we didn't use the LM designations, as the Logan/McCloskey half dime reference was just an idea at that time, so we referred to it as V1.

I actually still have mine, but I cracked it out and it's in a Dansco album... it was a 1943 steel cent in PCGS MS66 that I got on eBay for around $30. Cracked it right out and put it in the Dansco album. No way would grade MS66 anymore as it just doesn't have the same luster to it and now is had thick layer of haziness/toning on it from the album. Looks pretty junky actually, oh well!

Nope, not my first one. I do however have my first toner I bought specifically as a toner, circa 1990. While rather tame by my current standards I still like it, and given it's "1st" position I'm planning on keeping it. It's in a PCGS MS66FB rattler.

I really have no strong emotional attachment to my coins or their holders, so there is very little reason for me to remember such things.

Now that I think about it, I think I cracked my first few out to send to ANACS back in the day.

Now I'm considering sending most of my ANACS to PCGS.

My first PCGS coin ever was bought raw for me at Auction '86. A gem 1867-s quarter which I had to wait 6 yrs for it to reappear at auction after a record
setting price in 1980. After winning the coin in August 1986 it was immediately sent in for grading....PCGS MS66. Seemed like a good grade at the time considering
the coin was always just considered gem MS65. I had the coin for the next 18 yrs. It now resides in the finest seated quarter collection ever assembled (now MS67)

Ironic that my first official PCGS coin happened to be my dream coin, and the best coin I ever owned. It's been down hill ever since.

Yeah, it's the worst looking PCGS PR69DcAM I gave ever seen. There is a HUGE gash right across her chest. It would probably grade 63 today judging how they graded the ATB coins. It's a collectors club ASE graded that I got for free with my initial membership. I always look at that and wonder why they put such a terrible coin in their slab for new members.

Do they even do that anymore?

Yes I do. It's an MS-64 Cleveland Commem I bought from the local "Coin shop." I'll never darken their door again. I probably have between 150 and 200 PCGS graded coins now. Anyone ever having read any of the threads about selling coins knows that I never part with a coin once I get my hands on it. But since I have 2000 posts coming up sometime in the near future I might have to give away something if I can bring myself to do it. It would be like sending my children out into the world.

    Ron

Edited to add: I actually have 3737 posts. Once upon changing computers i could no longer access my old account and had to start all over. I lost 1813 posts. I have to sneak OT stuff in on threads like this to see who is paying attention.

Here's mine. Purchased raw in Aug 1991, submitted to PCGS in Nov 1991 through a Pacific Grove, CA dealer and was graded as VF-30. Cracked it out & resubmitted in Nov 2003, came back in its still current XF-45 holder.

I don't remember if this is the actual first PCGS coin I added to my collection, but this is the FIRST raw coin in my collection that I specifically sent to PCGS to be graded. Though it is far from being the most monetarily valuable coin in my collection, it is the MOST special and MOST meaningful coin out of any coin I have in my entire collection. And though I have had several offers to purchase this coin, it is one that I will NEVER sell. The reason it is so special is because this is the last coin I kept from the raw collection that I inherited from my aunt several years ago - which is how I even came to learn about and become interested in coins (and ultimately why I became a coin dealer). And let me just say that I REALLY LOVE THIS COIN!

Yep, I do. I bought it at CoinFest in 2009...because it was the cheapest one I could find ($6 IIRC).

I only have two in my collection, this one and one I won from a giveaway on here.
