Lafayette Dollar question

ajaanajaan Posts: 17,588 ✭✭✭✭✭
I know many of these have been counterfeited in China. Does this worn Lafayette raise any questions? TIA

I agree, it looks like the real-deal to me as well.

    Probably real ...

The angle of the picture makes it tough to tell. Why would you shoot a sales picture for a coin like that?
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Probably real but some bad distance photos!

Looks real, but with a lot of hairlines on the reverse. A Lafayette dollar is valuable enough to expect better photos, especially on a raw coin.

The lettering looks a bit off, from this distance.

That G06 is pretty neat and probably a good deal at that price, but I like the look of this VG10 better, even though it's nearly twice the price:

These are one of the commems that almost looks better well circulated than in high grade... well maybe not exactly as I've seen some monster examples too image

Always blows my mind that someone is willing to pay more for low grade coins when they can get a higher grade for less. Oh, that's right, low pop.image

I don't keep up with the counterfeit situation much, but I was not aware that the Chinese were counterfeiting circulate classic commemoratives. Is that really true?

The fact is that many of the Lafayette Dollars ended up being mishandled after being sold to people who were not coin collectors. I read this post and was excited and all ready to attribute the DuVall variety for the coin. However, those photos are so small and tilted, I wouldn't even begin to attempt to authenticate the coin using them. Furthermore, I would never bid on this coin because of the photos.

I wish I had a nickel for every time a dealer said that to me or for when someone posts that sentiment here...just shows the dealer/investor blood in them is > collector mindset (I'm a collector, love the challenge, the thrill in the chase, supplyimageemand, the look of worn silver esp, other metals, too, the travel history of the coin, esp the Commems which should not have been circ/pocketed, the 'exotic' nature the designs take on when worn per Higashiyama, etc etc)

You'll never 'get it', so don't sweat your confusion imageimage Oh, and you forgot to say how easy these are to 'make'-- artificially worn coins. We're still waiting for several forumites to show their results that look like these...

Ajaan, the one you linked looks to have a lot of chatter on the reverse fields as someone mentioned above and the pics stink. I don't prefer the look of the G6 with lots of marks to boot. The VG10 illini linked is overpriced for the condition rarity/pops. You can get an AG3 for a bit less, if I can find the seller, I'll PM you. The one ernie had up not too long ago was better than all these imho.

This one sold on heritage for about $400 incl juice I bowed out at 300. Winner immed flipped to ebay for $500 and we messaged back and forth for a while.
