1892 Columbian Expo Half Leather Coin Holder....has anyone seen one?

Tdec1000Tdec1000 Posts: 3,851 ✭✭✭
Just recently purchased one from a seller on ebay. I was curious if anyone has one and what the going price on one would be? Just want to make sure I didn't overpay.

So, if darktone, tells you what he sold his for, you can be assured that you did not pay too much, right? image

THese are not so easy to find, I bought one with a scrubbed coin in it for about 250 last year but I think I saw one at the Central NJ show for 600 a few years ago with a very pretty MS64 coin in it.

I used to own one by Wells Fargo and Company. It was a small leatherette piece about the size of a silver dollar and shaped like a small pouch. There is a pocket on the inside that contained a MS Columbian (92 I believe). They used to be worth around $250-$500 or so.

    Here's one on Heritage's site:

A couple of years ago I saw one at the Baltimore coin show with the original coin (I assumed) in it. The coin was dark and ugly from the tannic toning. (The stuff they use on leather is not good for coins) The price was $550, and I passed because the coin without the case was a no-grade that was worth $15 to $20 at most.

These items are interesting and historical, but I do have my limits since I’m not a specialist in the original commemorative coin packaging segment of the hobby.

Well, I guess I didn't pay too much then. I actually purchased the coin from him on ebay and had no idea he posted here. I then purchased the holder from him today. I have photos on my email from him. The holder says 1892 on it but the coin is an 1893.

I collect orginal holders (leather and otherwise) for Columbian Half dollars. I see that you purchased one some time ago. I am curious if there is any advertising or company name printed on the holder you purchased. Thanks in advance for your help.
