What is the value of a nice VG 10 1795 Cent?

BigEBigE Posts: 6,949 ✭✭✭
AnkurJ's post reminded me of this. I bought this many moons ago, a 1795 cent. It is very choice, says s-65 on the holder, nice chocolate brown color, well struck obverse, reverse weaker, dealer offered me 500.00 for it last week when I accidentally brought it to his shop with some other coins. Can an expert give me a ballpark, not sure if these are my dealers forte', Thanks in advance!-----BigE

    Hello,

From the description I'd accidentally let it go back from where it came - your collection!

I've heard much worse offers. However, S-65 is a 1794 cent. Sounds like it might be a very nice coin. --Jerry

    1794 S-65 Shielded Hair
The most common 1794 variety, and overgraded most of the time due to the hair detail. This is the "Shielded Hair" variety, which always comes with the lower left dentils on the obverse struck very high (and correspondingly weak in the upper right,) protecting the hair detail. I bought this from an EAC dealer.

Mark - That was nice of you to drive over to his home and take those photos! image

The obv looks a little less than a 10 and the rev looks a little better than a 10... not sure it would make it into a PCGS slab?

Drive? Are you kidding? My chauffeur has already been sent home for the night. I commandeered Longacre's private jet and flew over.

I don't know what PCGS would do with the coin, but I'd send it in the ANACS slab with a minimum cross and see what happened.

Seems like a $500 offer made you pay attention.

You could give a friend a great dealal $450 and feel good about it and, your friend would be happy.'

Or you could squeeze every cent out of it

For $500, I would have took it.

My friend the dealer can tell when I am a little unsure of the value of an item because he knows me, and I can tell if he needs a little extra profit by the tone and quickness of his offer because I know him. I have noticed that this scenario often leads to a no sale image If I sell it, I will put it on the BST, but it depends on if the doctor I see in a few weeks needs his Porsche tuned up or not, I might need extra money to pay him. I'll find out at the end of next monthimage----------------------------------------BigE

That is a very nice, well circulated early cent that many collectors would love to own. image

It may not grade in a PCGS holder because the edge damage at 9 k on the obverse, but in this grade that does not bother me very much. A big plus is the fact that the reverse lettering is complete, including the words "ONE CENT." That feature is often missing on these early cents, and having all of the lettering on a lower grade piece is quite unusual.

  • Great looking coin you have there Tree.

Is that damage or just crud on the the lower right edge? I wouldn't bother me in the least either way since the coin is so nice. I think ANACS would have noted it as damage if that's what it is. Love to own that one.

If that coin were mine, I would look for an offer in the $750 range, at least.

That's a very nice coin, IMO.
