Grades in - Type 2 Buffalo

This was a disappointment to me. This came back as an MS65, I was really hoping for at least an MS65+. The pictures don't do it justice. The colors are so intense on this coin, and the luster is incredible.

    Nice.

    Hoard the keys.
  • Properly grazed- weak strike on both sides and the LDS didn't help.

Don't be disappointed. I'd be proud to own that.

My initial reaction is that is a nice 65.
Seems that overall, you were disappointed with your grades. I've certainly been there. Their relative tightness on grades is good for all of us but difficult/disappointing for the person with the submission.

Nice coin, but certainly not above a 65.... at least from the pictures. Cheers, RickO

I agree, the obverse is not strong nor is the shoulder on the buffalo. Great luster and toning. Take something away from this and you will be a better grader for it.
There is no "AT" or "NT". We only have "market acceptable" or "not market acceptable.
  • I guess a more appropriate question to ask is how common is a strong strike on Type 2 buffalo's from this date? I've seen plenty from this issue that graded gem that weren't as well struck as this one. You can't compare this date to a 38-D and expect the same characteristics.

According to Ron Popes "Abraded Die Varities for Buffalo Nickels" out of 1021 coins he has viewed of this date and variety 8% with weak strike, 61% with typical strike, 30% with good strike and 1% with full strike.

Your coin pictured would definitely keep it from climbing above 65 due to the weakness in the hair and the top of the buffalos back. Also, you can see under the chin of the obverse it cuts back into the neck, which it should be more solid, another sign of a weak strike.
  • Fair enough. I could never see this one in anything less than MS65, to be sure. It looks great in hand, all those iridescent tones make it look like it came from a mint set years ago.

I see a 65+ or 66 on this one. Luster trumps strike with PCGS on this series, and the luster on this one is undeniably exceptional. I have a 66 that is very similar to this piece, in that the strike is good but the luster fantastic.

Most of you that call this a weak strike are wrong...... The coin has a nice strike on the obverse and better than average luster . Be proud as I could see this coin in a 66 holder! image

Agreed. This is a type 2 which has strike characteristics different from the type 1. The hit on the buffalo's shoulder keeps this from going MS66.
