Bought the Red Book Professional edition 2- 2011, my observations

After asking on the boards I went ahead and pulled the trigger on eBay for #24.99 plus a few buck for shipping. Thought I would give my likes and dis-likes. IMHO not for the novice who collects in circulated grades or the dealer who needs a quick flip to a VG-8 1877 IHC. A great addition at that price and great to have, but if you collect Classic Head Gold, you have that reference book already. A 2011 red book and 2001 professional edition make a great pair.

Like
-----
1) Like the auction prices
2) The die variety pictures are great for identification.
3)Auction results great
4) Bigger pictures, cleaner pictures
5) Background info on each coin great
6) Separate Proof Section- Awesome
7) Love the MS mid grade pricing and PL and DMPL material.

Dis-Like
-----------
1) almost every coin including early gold, copper and silver the grades start at AU-50, as a collector (few exceptions, pre 1800 stuff is VG or VF start. Other lie Lincoln 1909-present start MS-63- BUST HALVES- START AU-50 most can't afford to start in AU-50
2) Where are the Commems, you have classic, but what about 82 on? Sets? (maybe I am missing it?)
3) Expected to see more die varieties in there
4) Prices, while better still seem to be off IMO from what I have seen.

I have last years PEdition... I use it regularly. It is a good reference text. Now, if only I could find the Peace Dollar book... been to two Barnes and Noble and one Books a Million... neither one had it. Cheers, RickO

i didn't even know these existed until today when i saw them at barnes & noble.. i went home and looked em up to save a few bucks

i can get a 2nd edition for $8, and a 3rd edition for around $30. is it worth the $22 to get the new one?

it's too bad about the prices being for AU+ or whatever, did they fix that?

and yeah, 1982 & up commems would certainly be helpful....

The Red Book Professional Edition (now Edition #3) has been around for a few years. If price of the book is an issue for you, you don't need this book. It is not a book you sit around and "read" on a rainy afternoon. It is a reference you refer to when you need certain numismatic information. The price of $30 or so for the current edition is well worth it for the person, collector or dealer, who wants certain detailed data, some of which is not published in the regular Red Book. I would suggest you look thru the book at a Barnes & Noble or other bookstore before buying. See if the information is important enough for you. JMHO. Steveimage

  • << <i>So are you saying there is a difference between the typical Redbook and the Redbook Professional Edition, where have I been, never heard about this new book! >>

I've had it for a couple years now and always reach for it before the regular edition, unless I'm looking for a value for a lower grade example.

Amazon and Barnes and Noble are two excellent online venues where you can probably find the text for a low price.
