Buckshot for Liberty

So I noticed that there was a strange bit in this beat to heck 1854 Seated Liberty Dime.
I poked at it, and out it fell. I pressed it, and it was very soft
It seems as though the dime was shot by someone with a load of buckshot:

Having majored in Civil War/Reconstruction history in college, I like to think it was hit in the war, but I know it was probably a couple of drunk guys shooting at stuff.
Still cool though.

<< <i>Looks like a lead .20 caliber BB from an old, old pellet gun. Yes they made .20 cal's and people used .20 lead balls before injection molded pellets. Not a .22 and not a .177, best guess. Wouldn't have been a shotgun. >>
Why not a shotgun? Looks like bird shot rather than buck shot which is larger. I can see someone throwing a dime in the air and then shooting it with a shotgun Anne Oakley style.
Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

My thought too. Getting shot would have distorted the coin a lot more.....unless that is what all the hammer marks are for.
