Unique Toned $5 Gold! Thanks Fivecents!

I was offered this coin from a BST thread I had started. It was actually at TomB's getting photographed so TomB had went out of his way and sent the pictures to me. TomB was also helpful in giving a idea of price. I dont think any of us three had a good idea what a piece like this should sell fo since we have never seen one before. Any how I wanted to share this coin will you all and publicly thank fivecents for offering this coin to me! This coin is definitely very cool and as of right now one of my favorite coins!!! So thank you both very much!!!!! image

Now for the coin. Tom did way better than I could have ever done capturing the color! basically the whole obverse is pink with purple on the peripheries and the reverse is mostly pink with purple on the peripheries. Its graded PCGSDCAM69 and any of the marks you see are shadows from the holder. i was thinking of getting it reholdered until Paul pointed out to me that these holders are kind of rare (Barcode on the back). I hope you all enjoy it!!!

Once again thanks so much to Paul (Fivecents) and Tom!!!!!

That is pretty cool looking. I like the reverse toning with the sun.

TomB is the BomB (and Frank ain't so bad, either).

The coin, eh. I am not wild about it, but that stuff is not my cup of tea. It is unusual, to be sure.

I would like to know what caused that..... certainly different.... possibly something on the surface of the coin? Cheers, RickO
  • Cool, that is a unique gold item as far as toning goes. I like it, but probably would not pay much of a premium with metals going the way they are now.

I wonder what happened to the planchet to achieve those wild colors?

  • My theory is that there is more copper on the surfaces than gold. Of course this is just a theory right now. Some professors at school have been assisting me in trying to explain toning for a few months but we kind of lack the necessary technology image

The coin is pretty darn cool and quite unusual. Fivecents and Monstarcoins are really the folks that deserve the credit for this transaction since it was their coin and money, respectively, that was being sent through a third party whom neither had ever met (me) with the trust that all would proceed as planned. I think the design of the Smithsonian is outstanding and the toning set it off in an interesting manner. There are also a set of straight on shots without the slab being angled and these show little, if any, of the toning. Again, props to Fivecents and Monstarcoins.

I suspect the PCGS paper lable/ink is the culprit. I notice toning on a lot of AGEs in PCGS and ICG holders, but never in NGC holders. I suspect (don't know) that the paper label is not sealed off from the coin.

  • So I got a message from Paul last night. He informs he that he found two more in his SDB.......... This guy is like the god of toned gold. He also told me the story behind them being toned which is very interesting, I basically just wanted to let the forums know that Paul is a mad man! This guy deserves ten of these things imageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimage

I cannot wait to see these buggers in hand!
