could e. coli be a good reason to keep minting copper coins?

Silver is much more effective than copper.

The reality is that most bacteria and viruses on exposed surfaces die a natural death within a few hours if there is no nutrient on the surface.

Germs are not a big problem with coins because they don't adhere to
the smooth surfaces well. Paper currency is like a germ factory and if
the copper industry really wanted to do something for the health of the
populous they'd be working to get rid of low denomination notes.

The status quo has become sacrosanct and even those most able to
benefit from doing things right would rather maintain it.

We did an experiment years ago... put one each of different coins (cent - copper, zinc,- nickel - modern, wartime,- dime - silver, modern - quarter - silver, modern) in petri dishes with agar agar. ALL developed bacterial growth at a rapid rate, except the 90% silver. Growth was minimal and in the case of the quarter, died out soon after. Cheers, RickO
