A call from a boiler room...

291fifth291fifth Posts: 24,709 ✭✭✭✭✭
Yesterday, for the first time several years, I received a call from a coin/precious metals boiler room operation.

The voice on the end of the line was shrill and the sound of the other boiler room pitchmen was easily discernible in the background.

I couldn't wait to hang up. The sleaze just hung in the air.

All glory is fleeting.

If I have time I like to see how long I can keep them on the phone. One thing you can do is turn the TV or stereo up pretty loud and put the phone on speaker. If they ask, tell them the phone is broke and only works on speaker and the music is the neighbors. Keep saying "what" while he is doing the pitch at random times and have him repeat. Great fun!

I got one about three weeks ago. I was bored so I played along. I had the opportunity to buy graded - MS69 - 1986 $25 Gold Eagles. MS69! One point below perfect. Very rare. Act now. Limited opportunity. I forgot to ask for the price! You start laughing and the mind goes blank...

291 - were they peddling raw BU Morgan dollars? I got a call on my cell phone yesterday. If they are using a dealer mailing list, they are not going to make many sales!!

I used a fake name and accent with one recently.

Blew their mind. Had the first guy calling back to find the guy they talked to, who "wasn't me." I guess the first guy didn't get the number right. "not me."

I had a bunch out of Florida kept calling trying to sell me Franklin Half rolls, uncirculated. The problem, I work nights and sleep during the afternoon. They always called around 4 PM, guess they had it in their records I was home then. I tried to be nice and tell them I wasn't interested in Franklin rolls. They kept calling and calling and I finaly had to get rude with them and told them to leave me the #*@!! alone or I'd report them to the Attorney Generals Office. These people just won't take "No" for an answer. Haven't heard from them since. They have to be a lower form of life than car salesmen and I hate car salesmen.

The really bad ones are the guys that claim to store the bullion for you. That is a recipe for disaster.

I have no truck with anyone else if they are selling for a few points over melt. Which for most of them is probably not the case.

You guys need to get on the do-not-call list at donotcall.gov. Also, get an answering machine to screen your calls.

Get on the do not call list... and until that takes effect, request - once - to be taken off their call list. The second time, turn their number in to the AGO's office. Cheers, RickO

The newspaper advice columnist Ann Landers advised people to
blow a whistle into the phone to stop these guys.

Since they are crooks, "do not call" lists mean nothing to them.
