Selling a class ring for metal content

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,377 ✭✭✭✭✭
So, I have an old high school class ring that is 14k White Gold.

It has a fake "diamond"....so, first off, how does someone weight the ring and subtract that, non-destructively?
Secondly, how does 14k white gold get valued?

Trying to decide if it is worth it, at these gold prices, to convert it by selling it.....

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I have kept it for a long while, but the memories are mine and not my son's, so keeping it really does nothing now....would rather sell, remember the folks I am still in contact with, the reunions, and the pictures.....
I've played with doing this for a few years but now where things are, I am seriously considering it.

I purchase a lot of class rings/club rings/retirement rings etc. I usually subtract .5 gram for a typical one. Some have free floating stones, others have a felt etc backing to cushion the stone. It just isn't possible to be completely accurate with the stone mounted. You may not want to do it because of the attachment, but to get the most accurate weight you will have to bust out the stone. That's what will happen after you sell it, you just won't have to witness it.

Do you really need the money that badly?

current gold value is 47.25/g for 24k.
multiple your ring's weight in grams then subtract .5 grams for the stone.
multiple 47.25 x .58 to get the 14k gold value.
multiple the 14k gold value x the ring's final weight.
now subtract about 10-20% from that value if you sell to a dealer/refinery.

Are you still sure you want to sell it?

Amigo & Guitarwes - thanks for that info. I don't have a scale that goes that low, but I may just take it to the local coin shop and ask them to weigh it before anything destructive.

For those that don't think this feels right, or ask if I "need" the money, well, each person has their own reasons.
Do I need the money? Not to live on, but for fun purposes, sure....don't we all "need" money?

Does it feel wrong? Maybe a little, but it has been sitting around, unseen, for over 20 years. I can't wear it for a lot of things I do (sports, computers, etc) and it no longer fits me well and I don't feel like trying to get it resized. So, from move to move, it sits there. Instead of being a hoarder, I think that if I can cost-recover some of the initial outlay from 1985 for this ring, then why not? Does no one any good and why would my son keep this when I am gone? We don't live in that town, it has no meaning to him, and very little to me....I have moved on in my life.

So, if I can get a reasonable amount for it, then I can buy a coin and maybe he gets help getting a Nintendo DSi image

My class ring is sitting in the "to be junked" box just waiting for the right time.

If I remember the weight correctly it contains over $200 worth of gold. Almost doubled my money in only 25 years.image

That's kind of what I am thinking....and, I just found it (seriously, this is why I am willing to sell it....I never know where it is, only think about it once or twice a year....this time when talking to my mom brought it up, etc).
And, I just looked...it is only 10k, not 14k like she had thought (and I had posted).

So I think the numbers would play out differently....even less image

I sold mine during the 79/80 run-up and have never regretted it. Sounds like you'll put the proceeds to better use than I did. Partied for a whole week-end. If it's collecting dust, might as well put it to good use. I don't think your heirs will want to wear it.

  • Well if it ain't worth nothing anyway, ya just might as well keep it.

Of course, equally well, ya might just as well be rid of it.

I never bought my kids class rings, because most kids would quit wearing them after or before they go oft to college any way. So i waited for the big one College graduation. I did just buy my daughters College class ring last year for graduation $700 for 14kt, she went PSU and my son is a freshman now. I see so many people in the work force continue to wear there college rings. It seems so much more important to them. By the way My wife has never worn here class ring past HS graduation, and I passed on getting a HS class ring altogether.

I dont blame anyone for selling a high school ring. Heck, I sold mine a long time ago when I found no reason to keep it. Surprisingly, my kids did not want high school rings when it was "their turn" and for many years I kept mine thinking it could be "traded in" when it was their turn to buy in. In fact, when I got my high school ring, the ring company was making "trade ins" back then.

But what surprises me is that the ring in question is 14K gold? Wow. We only had 10K gold back in 1969.

    Thats some fancy high school!

I feel the same way as you do about my ring, and have thought about selling it. After 36 years I feel no emotional attachment, and haven't worn it since graduation in 1975 - now it would need to be sized, wouldn't wear it as a pinky ring. If I could flip it to a 1/10 oz gold eagle, I'd rather have that!
Have bought and sold on BST, many references available when asked.

  • A quick question about your earlier computation. If 14K equals a factor of .58, would 10K equal .41? Here's my work: 10/14 = x/.58. I weighed my college class ring and it came our 31 grams. Even subtracting .5 for the stone, that's a good piece of money. Or, if the math is wrong, maybe I'll contact my alma mater and ask for a refund.

I get a little over $600 in gold. Of course bullion buyers won't pay full gold value since they want to make a profit. However, with gold going up in value there is no big hurry to sell it.
