Mays Rookie on ebay

link

Any chance the Mays link above is real... image is small and I don't really know what to look for in terms of reprints.

Within the last year, I sold a 1951 Bowman Mays PSA 1 and bought a PSA 4. I don't know whether this one is real or not, but I wouldn't touch it unless it was graded. also, I can tell you from my experience of several months ago that 1951 Bowman Mays rookies were selling above SMR, at least in mid-grade.

Always looking for Mantle cards such as Stahl Meyer, 1954 Dan Dee, 1959 Bazooka, 1960 Post, 1952 Star Cal Decal, 1952 Tip Top Bread Labels, 1953-54 Briggs Meat, and other Topps, Bowman, and oddball Mantles.

I just need a real card for my signed rookie collection and just can't afford the $1,500+ . The BIN's seem very high on this card.

On these questions I usually try to prove the card is a reprint, rather than prove its authentic. This one I cant prove its a reprint.

To me there is absolutely no redflags at all in the auction description or card pictured. The card looks normal, front image color and brightness (not washed out), offcenter, tape stains, back color crispness and stain, all look good. Im not saying its 100% fact its authentic, its just I cant find a single probelm with the card.

If I were interested (I love raw lower grade popular cards) in 1950s issues this is exactly the type of auction I would jump at. But I would first write the seller and ask them some simple and easy to answer questions..

Where did you get the card?
    Do you have any others?
(seller looks to be a noncollector with 4 other raw cards listed, all look very authentic, 2 others have tape stain too, '53B Berra, '55T JRoby)

    and the most important question...
Id be happy to bid, but can you please guarantee the card is authentic and from 1951 and will grade authentic by SGC/PSA.

If they come back with wishy washy answers or balk at the guarantee, then PASS.

I don't necessarily disagree with any of this analysis but sellers often do tend to lie. In evaluating something like this I think it's important to remember that these reprints have been around now for many years, and after some time they begin to develop the same type of wear as an older genuine card. Chances are the older genuine key cards were "taken out of circulation" and begun to be stored properly say in the 80's or sooner making it say around a 30 year old circulated card that got banged around in a shoebox or sock drawer, played with, etc...whereby a reprint from the 80's is also now say around a 30 year old circulated card, give or take a few years, that has been banged around in a shoebox or sock drawer, played with, etc, thereby giving it the appearance with wear, tape stains, etc of a genuine older vintage card.

In hand it's not that difficult to tell the difference, but from an internet pic, sometimes very difficult to tell with a card such as this.

    I agree with Probstein...I'll pass.
