for the very knowledgable people here, I ask

is this a proof set, or a mint set:

I will elaborate on this only if need be, but for now I just pose a question

It's a 63 proof set from the Philly Mint and if given to ya from granpa or grandma
or from mom or dad it's value is pricless, but if it's on ebay it's about $24.00 Bucks.

The octagon embossed foil seal that is enclosed inside certifies this as a Proof set, period.

It's also real easy because after the
date on the lower left side of the
    envelope, it says "PC"

    That means 'Proof Coins'

Hello all: I do not know Pontiacinf or the reason for his question or the significance of his posted link, but the thread did remind me of an encounter I had at a small CT show a few weeks ago. An elderly gent had set up a table of US coins which he claimed (and I have no reason to doubt) represented his holdings after many years of collecting. Among the items was a 1958 Philly cent in a 2-by-2 marked $1500.00. I was completely mystified. The coin was absolutely and without question a mid-grade proof with the typical watery mirrors and no frost. What was I was missing? Wrong metal, perhaps? Split planchet? Micro-autographed by JFK? Finally, I had to ask. He replied, "That's not a proof. That came from a mint set." Three times I asked if he was absolutely certain, wanting him to admit the slightest possibility that he was mis-remembering. No success there. He sincerely believed that his proof 1958 cent is a business strike. And so it sat, right next to his 1958 proof Jefferson, also priced at $1500.00.

If I see this again, I'm going to mention it to the show manager.

    Whit.
