Has Ebay become just too greedy?

if you let ebay goad you into offering "free shipping" then that cost puts you over $100 to sell a $1000 coin.

It's not a pretty outcome for us sporadic sellers that don't offer free shipping. If you don't have powerseller status and "top rated", then the logirithims (sp) keeps your listing in the bottom 10% or so, meaning you're buried in the back pages on a search status. A couple years ago, I ran 2 AGE's @ 99¢ auction and both closed about $50-60 less than the other comparable sales. Low volume sellers take it up the rear on the full paypal/ebay fees as well as lower sales price. I never would've guessed that it would be that much difference for Bullion, but I guessed wrong. If you're not willing to commit insane full time hours to continually be a powerseller, they don't even lube you up first.

One of the things that pushed eBay fees up substantially was when they introduced eBay Bucks a few years ago. The customer gets 2% credit for purchases (sometimes they offer promos for 4%) to be used towards future eBay purchases. Naturally, the seller's fees have to cover this 2% giveback to the customer. I do think this loyalty program will help keep eBay in the game with their customers. I've had customers tell me that the eBay Bucks help them buy some pricier coins than they otherwise would/could. Kind of odd that my own high fees help finance some of my higher-end sales.

is it just me or are others annoyed as well that ebay, is now requiring set up of an automatic payment method for sellers fee's......

not only that they will not allow me to list any items until I set up automatic payment!

I have been an ebay Member since: Sep-06-04 have not had to set up any automatic payment method and have not had any issues paying my sellers fee's

I think they have. I think they have lost billions by trying to earn more millions. Many people who used to sell like crazy on ebay have stopped, I have myself limited my transactions on ebay to anything I cannot sell elsewhere, before it was the first place I went. I think they seriously damaged themselves when they revamped their pricing structure a few years ago. Sure, they make more per piece listed, but they have driven away untold millions of people and would-be-listed items.

<< <i>"Definitely the eBay fee structure makes it very difficult for the seller. The worst part is that the seller has to do all the work. You pay Paypal, you pay eBay, you take all the risk, and you have to image, ship and do everything.

And, hence, you have created a company to try to do all of this for your consignors for less than the ebay fees? Good luck with it. This is an example of the "competition" that folks have been predicted will be coming.

That's exactly why. If eBay had the fees of 10 years ago, I would not have created my new company.

I believe it's essential to provide large pics of the coin. I can't pull the trigger on any of those Jeffs without knowing that I'm cutting down on fees to the PO as well. I know it would be tedious job to do that for every coin but if a coin is not worthy of a close-up, sure. But for collectors who want to see where the hits are, the strike etc., were not playing monopoly where we need one game piece to fill a grid.
But I like the site, would like to link to it and have bookmarked it.

  • Meg Whitman ruined Ebay for all of us. How do you think she could afford to run for governor of California? 140 million of her own money? Yeah, all from bonuses from Ebay fees....

    Hi Leo,

Are you referring to GreatCollections? If so, you can click on the lower right corner of the image which will expand to your full screen. It's not obvious enough (I missed it too at first), and our programmers are adding a message to the image soon to point out the lower right "expand" button.

We're actually imaging every coin, no matter what the value. Our goal is to provide high quality images of all coins being offered.

If you have any other feedback, would love to hear from you. Thanks,

She was also responsible for building part of eBay. I know there are negatives (what was she thinking with Skype?), but there were also positives (Paypal). From an investment standpoint, Paypal was one of the best acquisitions in the past 10 years; I think it's actually worth more than eBay if you split them up.

But you're right, fees are too expensive on eBay.

    This bears REPEATING...

<< <i>A year and a half ago, you could sell 5 items a month with no final value fee...of course you had to give Paypal their 3%

Then they got rid of that, but capped the fee at $20

Then they capped it at $50

Now it will be capped at $100

So on a $1500 coin the total fees have gone from $45 to $65 to $95 and soon to be $145. That's a 245% increase in less than two
years. Greed is the only word for it. >>

  • With out Ebay having any real competition they can continue to run the sellers fees as high as they can.
Just like gas prices. Does anyone drive less at 4 dollars a gallon than at 3.50? Not enought to make any difference.

So, want to stop Ebay, someone needs to put the time, effort and millions into creating a real alternative.
I am amazed that Google or Amazon hasn't attempted one yet.

Amazon already did. They gave up a long time ago.

Google has the ability, but they need to be careful. They earn a lot of money from eBay on advertising.

I airmailed a copy of the ham magazine QST to a ham in Libya 5 or 6 years ago. It cost $7.48 postage and he never received it. All of Africa is full of postal thieves and I will not mail there any longer. The same holds true for Asia except Japan. >>

Let me know when there is a cheaper alternative that gets similar results and reaches the entire world.

Ebay might be positioning themselves for a run at Amazon.

Amazon keeps getting into disputes with states over sales taxes and when and if that 'no sales tax edge' that Amazon enjoys goes away...EBAY may be sitting in the Driver seat.

Pretty soon it's no listing fee time 24/7 on ebay so there will be a flood of retail price listings.

Ebay works well if you are able to use it to herd buyers to your website. It's still the best game in town for a lot of merchandise.
    Have a nice day
