Crossover

Has anybody sent in a crossover (not cracked out) and received and upgrade? I cracked some out and had some upgrades but am not sure if still in a slab.

    I've had no crossover success.

  • I have...but I usually crack them out, depending on the coin.

I may be wrong but it is my impression that it doesnt really matter because the coins are cracked before they are sent to the grader, if it is certain that it will be put in their holder regardless of grade.

Oh I have had much success with cracking first....but it is funny that if I send it in the NGC/ANACS/PCI Old Green then they do not cross or they downgrade. Send in the same coin again raw/cracked and I get the same grade or an upgrade.

I still think there is some bias so I will never try to cross one again.

    I have had a couple.
A circ. 1877 Ind. went up one grade.
A Unc. Walker went up a grade.
    Mostly though just a cross.

What about having a PCGS coin re-evaluated for a possible upgrade. What is the process for that?
I have at least a half dozen PCGS slabs that are 100%, (IMO), undergraded. I would like to submit some of these at the Balt. show next week. What`s the fee?

Yeah, I've no firm rule to crack or not.
I've had some nice ($$$) upgrades both ways.

I sent a old ANACS VF30 1934d VAM-4 to PCGS and they sent it back VF35. While a Cir Modern coin isn't definitive proof it does show they are open and I would like to point out they were right ! The coin is a slider EF coin and ANACS was way to hard

I have had anacs cross to PCGS higher both circ and unc.

NGC is a different story.....usually drops a grade. I have had one cross at grade NGC66 to PCGS66 1948 DDR.

Edited to add that I never crack out.

I had a gold piece cross to a higher AU grade. It was originally in an old ANACS holder.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

    Yes.

It's very uncommon, but I've had 6-8 go up over the years.
    When in doubt, don't.

Judging by my past couple submissions, you could argue that I've mastered crossing colorful lincolns/indians from NGC to PCGS with a one point drop ( both crossovers and crackouts).

    guess I"m not bragging.
I'd like my copper well done please!

Yes. Not a lot, but some have upgraded. I have one at PCGS now and I believe it is at least two grades under where it should be. We'll see.

HRH (or was it DW?) explained more than once that getting an upgrade from a crackout but not through a cross is a perfectly reasonable thing. With a cross the 3rd side can't be seen so it had better be a very strong candidate to overcome any rim surprises. Cracked-out, the entire coin can be seen and graded without being conservative.

Crack-out, and the collector takes the risk. Cross-over, and PCGS takes the risk (and therefore errs on the side of caution).

Hopefully crossovers of NGC coins with the edge view holders are a bit easier then as the edge and rims can be seen better than if they were in a PCGS holder.

Long ago I sent in 3 gold coins in NGC holders. One upgraded, one downgraded and one styed the same.

Since then I crack and send them in and have always upgraded

Sometime one can do better by doing a crossover at a lower accepted grade, then resubmitting for regrade, where the coin is viewed raw by the graders.

I sent a Fugio crossover from NGC. It was graded as VG8 from NGC and PCGS knocked it up to a VG10. I think PCGS has it right. Not a big score, but makes the value another $100 or so.

    Nothing recent.

1998 - Crossed an 1835 Classic 1/2 Cent in NGC 64 BN to PC @ same grade.
1999 - Upgraded a 1936 S Walker from PC 5 to PC 6 in holder. Originally submitted raw a year earlier & it got into the PC 5 holder.
    2003 - Upgraded a 38 D Buff in a PC 6 OGH to PC 7 in holder.

Nothing since, though I don't submit much. The first coin was very high end for the grade. It didn't have quite enough cartwheel luster to get into a 5 holder. The second coin imo should have been in a 6 holder in the first place. The third coin was a technical 6, but was upgraded because of its stunning toning.

I won't crack out an expensive coin. I've heard too many horror stories and don't need the aggravation.
