Guess the grades, win some cash - Grades and Winner in last post!

For coins are going through final stages of grading ATS with results available today/tomorrow. First I thought about giving away a small coin worth about 30 bucks to the person closest to the actual grade (lowest sum of differences between guess and actual), but then realized that I would end-up with another 10 bucks worth of shipping cost out of Canada and with current shipping delays it would be weeks before the winner even receives it...

So, how about I'll just PayPal 30 bucks to the winner?

Good luck!

Even though I gave it the lowest WAG, I really like that Philippine peso best.. looks like a really handsome coin.
And I'm still kicking myself for not picking up one of those Russian anniversary rubles when they were still affordable a while back.
Heck, the portrait peso is great too.. Great stuff all around! Good luck! image

The 1765 8R is the one I'm really pondering, it's hard to see if there's circulation on that one or not.

    Thanks for the chance!

I would love to hear your reasoning. Are you worried that your explanations might influence other's decisions? I was thinking as a rule of thumb to use whoever posted first as a tie-breaker.

I think I know the winner, but I'm not telling you until you get the grades.

If you don't believe me, ask the winner later if I had PMed him to congratulate him in advance or not. It was just a guess, since I can't grade these.

edited to add: Roman, it would be interesting to hear your predictions too. Outside the competition of course. image

The grades are in and we have a winner.

    NGC's opinion: 62 - AU Details - 55 - 55

    MacCrimmon: 62 - AU Details - 55 - 53

Grats, Mac! PM me your PayPal address image Did you also happen to have a PM from Dimitri, by chance? image

Walter was close second with his prediction of 61-BB-53-55, falling just 1 point behind Mac.

There were some good educated guesses in this thread. Also, it's difficult to judge blast white coin from a photo, especially if the photo was taken to show the luster and not the surface. Thank you all for participating.

My personal guesses were 63 - either 62 or a BB - 55 - 45. There are hairlines on the surface of that pillar, but having seen much worse examples lately in both NGC and PCGS plastic I took a gamble.

Indeed, he did! Now the OmniGreek needs to PM me some 100% gainers in the stock markets. imageimage But, I like small, indy O&P plays at the moment.

As to grading via images, it's difficult at best, but 2K's images provide a good basis for at least an educated guess. image What can't and never can be really seen with images are fine hairlines and micro-ticks. The "rub" is that those hairlines, etc. could be from actual wear (call them dirty lustre breaks), or just simply bag friction (at least for more modern material).

Sometimes I'm lucky, and never forget a clock is always right twice per day.

PM Sent, and thanks for the chance.

Not exactly TrueView, but one of the reasons I pay extra attention to these NGC images when browsing eBay...

The first image is nice, they even got the luster. The second doesn't allow you to see any hairlines and the other two missed the colour, but they're decent images all around.

How much do they charge for them?

Roman, your predictions were very good too, except for the peso, you were a bit hard on it.

I'm afraid I didn't understand what you meant by "paying extra attention to these images when browsing ebay". image

It was $1 per coin. What I meant about eBay is that NGC imaging usually hides color and luster, so whenever I see sellers use NGC images - i pay more attention to the coins because they're often nicer in-hand.

From the images, I had a real problem with the 1803 8R-
