is that the grade you were expecting?

just getting a plus may not be good if you were expecting a higher grade.

Just wondering why you cracked out the morgans before submitting. Do the graders get to see the grade assigned by the other company or is it hidden so as not to bias them one way or another. I am getting ready to try some crossovers and wonder the best way to approach this. I guess the fact that you can get them returned in the original holder if they don't cross would be one reason to keep from cracking them. Congratulations on your submissions,

The coin isn't removed from its holder until it has been determined that it will meet or exceed the minimum grade you cite (citing nothing is taken as same grade or better). The currently assigned grade isn't hidden. Graders are supposed to be unbiased in their judgment.

Another advantage to cracking the coin, besides that you mentioned, is that if the cross is borderline the TPG will not cross it because they are unable to see (much of) the third side. (This is why you can't ask for a cross on an MS/PR70 coin.)

So the TPG has to take a guess on the condition of the rim it can't see and must consider a likely grade with imagined damage. Once that slab is cracked the TPG is committed to meeting/beating your cross grade request.

I prefer cracking to crossing for these reasons except where the value of the coin fluctuates wildly between grades.
    Lance.
