Hey...CRO...can you find me some certified peas, clear of bugs??

Couldn't sleep the other night, so grabbed a book I thought would SURELY put me down.
Well, turns out it's interesting reading. Mossman's "Money of the American Colonies and Confederation". Bought it from John Burns at the FUN show.
Commodities were used when "real" money was in short supply. In a chart from 1727 was a table that looked pretty unusual, until seeing "Peas clear of bugs" and "Sweet firkin butter".
Man, would I like to see THOSE certified by a TPG.

"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. (Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose, Cardinal.

Well, haven't finished it yet but it IS pretty fascinating.
I've had an interest in the barter economy ever since learning that the trumpet I played in school was purchased for 1 cow for my father in 1928. I had no idea how well developed bartering was in early America, to the point of defining to the penny what commodities were worth.
Being a merchant back then required a lot of skills - how to wharehouse the material, get rid of it, make change, etc. Makes being a merchant in the modern era look much simpler.

Neat!
It's all about perspective.

Wow, and here I thought some of my BST "barter" transactions were complicated.
Agree - it's silver instead of brass and might have acquired some nice patina over the years - will post a pic if it's got rainbow toning.
