What aspect, if any, of the coin collecting hobby...

...do you wish would "go away?"

Registries. While they have saved the market for many coins, I believe they have distorted pricing.

They will never go away. They go back, in spirit, to two collectors comparing their coins. Long before Sheldon "Large Cent Whist" even.

The overabundance of mint products. It'd be nice to have a cent, nickel, dime, quarter, half and dollar for each of the three mints... and NOTHING more!

I don't swim in this pool, but the idea that a tiny mark seen only under a loupe can mean a difference of five figures in price.

The greed, big egos, and dishonesty of some dealers.

The rip off National Dealers that use Magazines and Cable Networks to market their Junk. I have been buying from the public for the last 7 yrs. I come across it over and over.

Case in point. Yesterday I purchased a hoard that was acquired over about a 15 yr time period from an elderly gentleman. Multiple sets of state qtrs, framed type sets, vairous sets in great presentation boxes. 24 kt plated coins and stamps etc etc.

All of it packaged and illistrated as if it was worth a fortune. I purchased everything from him, but very little was worth more than face. I paid him face of $1200, of which he had paid over $12000. Those companies prey on the elderly and unknowleageable ......

That tends to be experience or learned behaviour... or both.

Get rid of registry points, gpa's, rankings. List collections alphabetically that have images. Show % of completion. Give option to buy a code number to list any company slab in a separate registry catagory for true coin collectors.

This way, I'll be able to show some respect to those collectors who collect really nice coins.

    Does it work in reverse?

"If you have PCGS slabs, you have a really nice coin"

    Is this always true?

The pettiness. A bunch of mostly upper income white males and many of them purposely choose to spend a good part of their energy on grudges. I guess some of that is to be expected with a bunch of males with above average incomes, and lower than average social skills, but the pettiness often gets way over done, and tends to spill over to almost every area of the hobby.

The extreme focus on nitty gritty differences on coins as if they were major variants really worthy of notice.... hairsplitting, obsessive-compulsive focus on trivia and meaningless detail. Blecchhh.... Cheers, RickO

Third party grading. The business was a lot more fun when the only opinions that mattered were those of the buyer and seller.

The recent examples of dealer groups, grading services, and the ANA to go into full war mode against the LESSER of two problems.

2007 - Which is the bigger problem on Ebay?

    1. SEGS and PCI slabs containing genuine coins

    2. Totally counterfeit raw coins from China.

The coin community chose #1 as their target, and millions of coins are unsellable on eBay, many sellers received 30 day
suspensions for selling them even under the new rules (as I did, when a raghead Ebay "trust and safety" guy interpreted the rules to mean that
even showing a PHOTO of a non-approved slab was MENTIONING it, or a VAM number was a numerical grade of a raw coin.) Ebay sent out letters
deeming SEGS and other brands of slabs as COUNTERFEIT, ruining the reputations of many sellers,

Some permanently suspended, (see this typical example) who bought these coins in good faith from legitimate sellers.

You can't find more than 2 or 3 SEGS or PCI slabs on eBay, and those are quickly zapped.

But what did they do about the totally fake counterfeits? NOTHING.

    Now today...

Which is the bigger problem in numismatics?

    1. Genuine coins in authentic slabs which someone "improved" in ways that may or may not be acceptable

    2. Dangerously good counterfeits in dangerously good counterfeit PCGS and NGC slabs.

Ahh, once again they chose #1

Boy, I couldn't disagree more! The Registry has done more for coin collecting than any other single thing since the beginning of coin collecting!

What should go away is BULLION!!!

The following coin is not the nitty-gritty example your talking about. In fact, since it's an ultimate coin that every true Jefferson nickel
collector would love to own, it takes a nitty-gritty individual to recognize it's superior qualities and to understand it's rarity.

A lot of good answers here particularly with respect to forms of fraud, whether counterfeiting or doctoring. However, an aspect of the hobby that i have found to be a big drawback is the concern over security and theft.
