Both are 1936 mercury dimes graded by PCGS

1) MS67FB with a sticker
2) MS67+FB failed to get a sticker

I would have to see both coins to make a determination. Otherwise it is just a number.

I know the second is better to have in a PCGS registry set

The stickered coin. It will be cheaper, more liquid, and arguably as good or nicer than the plus coin. And if that non + coin
has not been back through the system like 99% of the coins out there, then it's possibly a nicer coin in all respects.

If + coins don't eventually get stickered, I think they will lose some or much of that premium. Two opinions are always better than one.
But of course before buying, I'd inspect them both. While CAC probably shouldn't take the + sign into effect when certifying, I
would think they would be more careful about putting one on a coin that will probably bring a strong premium and carry their banner.
A lot of people out there probably think that CAC is agreeing with the + sign as well.

it is my understanding that coins are stickered based only on the grade not the + or *

in addition the sticker only shows the coin is solid for the grade.

therefore a non stickered coin could still be that grade but at the lower level for the grade.

  • It depends on the coins. I might prefer one and someone else might prefer the other. A matter of taste.

If your going for points get the + coin. If you are going for quality you need to see both in had.

An ms67 with a green bean is just properly graded, so it could be ms67.4 to ms67.7; whereas, a ms67+ is ms67.7 to ms67.9.

I still stand by you need to see both coins to make a decision.

I think the green sticker means the coin is a MS67.4 to MS67.99
the gold sticker may imply something over MS67.99

Remember they don't look at the + or * just the MS grade.

Artificial inflation turns me off. If one of the two coins really turned me on I would probably buy it. If not I would keep looking at 1936 MS67FB coins untill one flipped the switch. Certainly non stickered or non plus coins would NOT be left out while the continued search was in progress.

I have not seen a 1936 dime graded MS67+ with or without a sticker yet.

How would you know that the second one failed to get the sticker?

Isn't this the problem with stickers? You can see what successfully stickered but have no idea about a coin without one (unless you submitted the coin, of course).

Sounds like you are asking whose opinion do you trust more CAC or PCGS?

  • I'd want to see the coins. If the two coins looked exactly the same, I'd flip a third one.

An ms67 with a green bean is just properly graded, so it could be ms67.4 to ms67.7; whereas, a ms67+ is ms67.7 to ms67.9.

Not necessarily. A MS67 stickered coin supposedly grades from MS67.4 to MS68.3. And I would submit that most MS68 coins fall in the lower half of that grade range (68.0 to 68.4).
So a green bean could also mean an undergraded coin at say 68.2. It's just not a no brainer undergrade that a gold sticker would represent.

A MS67+ Merc implies on that one grading event it was deemed to be high end. It doesn't mean the next time it will be judged the same way. In fact it's already been
widely discussed here that a 67+ coin could easily come back 67 or even 66 the next time out. What the bean means is that CAC will offer to buy that coin at
prevailing 67 levels. PCGS is not in the business of buying and selling coins. They will only buy back coins that they deem to be mistakes. So each person can make their
own decision as to what the various holders, stickers, and + signs are worth to them.

I'll take the coin with the sticker for reasons explained by Roadrunner
  • All other factors being equal, I would tend to favor the + over the bean. Green CAC just means at least "solid for the grade," but might mean "high end for the grade." For coins under-graded, there are separate gold stickers. That is, a green bean on our hypothetical Mercuries should mean MS67.4 to MS67.9. MS68.0 or higher is MS68, and thus gold bean. PCGS + grades only apply to high end for the grade, not just solid for the grade, i.e. MS67.8 or MS67.9, and thus, in theory, anyway, the plus grade from PCGS should be a higher guarantee than a green CAC sticker. A green sticker on a plus-graded coin is wholly-redundant by this logic, whereas a coin with a green CAC sticker but no plus, on a coin graded within the last twelve months, in theory would be solid for the grade but not high end, or MS67.4 to MS67.7.

But, yes, because grading is subjective and MS67.4 through MS67.9 are splitting hairs on a coin that the same experts with over 20 years of experience might instead grade MS66 or 68 on other days of the month, the reality may not always line up with the theory.

That's why I look at the coin.

I am partial to stickered coins for liquidity reasons. Based on that my choice would be the 67 CAC.

However, there was a time I had a 1934-1945 FB registry set and wanted to break into the top 10. I could have been easily swayed by that +.
