The quasi-official Collectors Universe UGLY COIN CONTEST #1: March, 2011

It's time for an ugly coin contest. I enjoy the "eyecandy" threads as much as anyone, but my coins are usually outclassed in such displays.
Bring us your tired, your Poor (PO01)... your huddled nasties waiting to breathe free!
I'll start us off with a 20th century US half dime. Bet you didn't think such a coin existed, did you?

Too bad this bad old scan is all I have of it, 'cause the coin has since crumbled into little crystallized silver crumbs inside the flip in my detector finds album.
Think you can out-ugly me? Maybe you can. But I should warn you that we detectorists tend to have a slight edge in ugly coin competitions!
Winner gets bragging rights. Who knows, if we want to, there can be a poll later to decide, and I can make up a little sig line "virtual trophy" plaque, using a picture of the winner's coin.

4 of my favorite dirty dollars.
I like that piece, by the way. Not just 'cause it's a holey. It's got ... character.
Multiple entries are OK but let's try to keep to one coin per photo, at least?
PS- your 1888-O CircCam dollar is disqualified, because it is NICE. No nice coins allowed! That piece actually has the look I prefer in a Morgan dollar. And for some perverse reason, I've always sort of liked the look of circs like that more than MS coins. Go figure. (The exception being DMPLs. Those knock me out. I saw a beauty today.)
PPS- I really, really like that smooth '21 Peace, too. 1921 "High Relief"? I don't think so! Not anymore!
But here is another approach. BAD ART
The reverse is Frosty the Snowman, as I recall.
I don't really think of it as "ugly", though.
This whole thread is a spinoff of my recent Darkside "Slick Vicky" contest in which I was totally and completely beaten at my own game.
I think an ugly coin should have at least a little corrosion, or PVC, or some nice knife wounds, or somethin'.
C'mon, Lowball collectors... I know there are plenty of y'all out there. Bring it!!! It's time to kick things up... er... um... down a notch!
The 88-O does have a cool look, and is actually in a Mint commem holder.
The 21 Peace is grimmy n dirty but I still like her.
Geez, man, you need remedial classes in ugly coin collecting!
But yeah- point well taken. "Bad Art" or ugly subject matter is just as much a criterion for ugliness as damage or excessive wear, I suppose.
Except for that half dime. That's been through the wringer.
A cent I picked up off of the street. BU.
Umm, I mean worse. Gaah! You knowhutimean.
We'll probably be seein' a lot of "Parking Lot Pennies". Brace yourselves.
Calling Airplanenut...
Jeremy- post it again!
You know the one.

Here ya go, LordM. I picked this up last weekend at a local show. There is a lot of luster underneath all of that toning, not that it matters.
I couldn't help myself, such a fun thread, and no shortage of uglies.
This Peace dollar is unc, but ugly. Actually found in a complete 20th Century type set at the dump, yes the dump.
The reverse had masking tape holding it in. One mans trash is another mans treasure.
A 1883 CC that didn't make it to the GSA sale of the eary 70's.
Wonder how many poker games this was used in, 4 Aces I'm all in.
PCGS Public Verdict: No Decision/Refund
Likely PCGS Secret Verdict: Code 666 Too Ugly To Slab
Not being the childhood numismatic prodigy of the Airplanenut variety, I expressed my enthusiasm by scrubbing it regularly to a glorious shine with baking soda and water. It retoned nicely, don't you think?
Oh, and there's a distinctive "X" somebody carved in it, to give it character.
BTW, Lord M. I don't think your half-dime qualifies. For all we know, the other half may have been MS65 CAC. The rule should be that you have to show the WHOLE coin.
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
Not as pretty as yours Teva

I really need to re-photo that one.
<< <i>Finally a thread that makes my collection look good... >>
This was an upgrade

I am looking forward to getting a better photo of it- it is off with the rest of my holey collection, being photographed. There is a counterstamp on the obverse of that piece that somebody attempted to erase, thereby making it all the uglier. I didn't think the counterstamp was legible, but when I was packing up the coin to ship off, I had it under one of those halogen type lamps, and the lettering was much plainer. I wonder if the counterstamp will come out in the new photos. Could be interesting.
I see some people's definition of "ugly" is quite questionable, at least from where I sit. Then again, I think everybody's got the spirit of this one. I predict this thread might outgrow the capacity of a poll to handle the final decision.
PS- Teva's 1982-D cent with warts is a real contender. So is DorkGirl's "disposal nickel".
Most say it was post-mint damage, but the x on the reverse is raised above the coin.
How did the obverse escape the carnage?
Beautiful uglies everyone. Such a fun post.
EDIT: A close up of the reverse
I knew it would happen.
Have previously posted this in an ugly coin thread. Thought I'd deleted the pictures too!
If it's not eligible, I offer this Mississippi quarter:
It's so ugly that my camera didn't want focus on it!
<< <i>I automatically win!
AGAIN, I AUTO-WIN-THIS coin is "as is" not made to look ugly, not enviroment challenged, just plain god awful ugly

I don't care what the "mainstream" collectors say- one judges dug coins by a different set of standards, and for digs, I'd say those are pretty fun finds.
Sure beats the heck out of another pop top or nail or clump of foil, eh?
<< <i>Aah, yes, such finds are dear to my heart. I'll take old coins like that any way I can get 'em. Naturally I like to dig nicer ones, but the uglies have a place in my affections, too.

haha, I'd dig a fire roasted silver roosie over a pop top any day! Any old coin, even wheats still get me excited, even if they're green.
Each one of those finds above made my day when found. In fact, the spanish silver made my whole year last year! It might be worth $10 on a good day, but it was the idea of pulling 1700s silver from the ground... long forgotten for over 200 years.

Amen, brother, and can I get a Hallelujah? We think alike.
Hey, jmski52- a pox on your Jefferson nickel... literally! Good play!
Jeremy needs to post THE COIN.
C'mon, Jeremy- don't make me have to PM you and beg for it again.
I suppose I'll have to go and find it if you don't show up.
